Job Purpose
BBC East Midlands has a multimedia broadcast centre in Nottingham, with a team of around sixty multi-skilled journalists and operational staff. We cover Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire on TV, local radio and Online. It is home to the award winning early evening regional programme East Midlands Today and also produces numerous TV bulletins from early morning to late evening across the entire week. It also produces the lunchtime Sunday Politics programme. We have a multi-skilled operational team working across the output seven days a week.
We are looking to recruit a Senior Technical Operator into our team with emphasis on at least two of the following:
- Gallery operational skills such as Sound, Lighting or Technical Management
- Editing / PSC newsgathering operations
- Location experience would be desirable but not essential
All of our team are expected to be multi-skilled and to deliver a number of roles in the operation. This may include gallery and studio operations, live sound mixing, manual camera operation, communications and circuit co-ordination. It may also include picture editing, media hub, location shoot-editing and live vehicle operation.
Are you the right Candidate?
- You will be familiar with working in a broadcast environment on live programming often in a pressurised situation.
- You will be comfortable working in a fast-moving creative environment, demonstrating the appropriate level of resilience, as well as being able to communicate clearly and assertively.
- You’ll be passionate about working on live news output and show a willingness and ability to learn new systems and processes quickly.
- A good understanding of health and safety issues and best practice is important.
- You’ll be willing to accept a varied shift pattern which includes early and late shifts as well as regular weekend working.
- Experience of working as a Technical Operator in a live broadcast environment and a range of production genres.
- Experience of operating baseband and file-based routing and ingest systems.
- Good technical knowledge of digital media standards, codecs and production workflows and their dependencies.
- Good technical knowledge of broadcast systems and infrastructure and studio and Outside Broadcast (OB) facilities
- Understanding of television lighting and the equipment and systems.
- Appreciation of colour and light in television production and skill in operating the equipment to control these factors to meet artistic and editorial requirements.
- Good knowledge of local and inter-regional circuit routing and control systems and processes.
- A good knowledge of safe working practices in studio and OB environments including Electricity at Work requirements.
