Job description

About Auto Trader

We’re Auto Trader, the UK's leading automotive marketplace and a FTSE 100 tech-listed company, uniting the largest and most engaged consumer audience with the most extensive network of vehicle sellers. At our core, it's all about people. We embrace diversity, celebrate our differences, and forge our own path. Our six core values define our distinct culture, and our dedication to in-person collaboration sets us apart.

About the role

We are looking for a Senior UI Designer to join our Product Engineering team in Manchester. This role will involve contributing to product design with Mobile Apps  - continuously improving our experiences and building continuity across web and mobile - and offering your UI and mobile app design expertise to critical parts of our products and our design system.

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with creative leads, native apps, product teams, and designers, playing a pivotal role in crafting and conveying the Auto Trader narrative from audience acquisition through to our core journeys. Additionally, you'll work closely with product managers, engineers, and researchers, making significant contributions to the entire design lifecycle. This includes actively participating in design workshops and sprints and designing, prototyping, and testing ideas within your team and in more formal testing environments. You’ll also play a key role in influencing, persuading, and evangelising our design system and user experience design within your product and wider design teams.

We are a very data-driven company at heart, so while working at pace, you’ll have the confidence to make decisions, knowing when to use qualitative or quantitative data and when it’s acceptable to rely on your knowledge and experience. Our work requires us to be flexible so that you can switch from high-level, big-picture thinking to the detail of user stories and UI designs.

Our collaborative approach is key to our success. As part of the broader design team, you’ll be learning from and helping others, identifying, and implementing improvements to our work. We are looking for someone who can be an ambassador for Mobile Apps and share best practices.

What we’re looking for

  • Experience working in-house or at an agency in a UI design role.
  • Experience designing Mobile Apps with familiarity of the specific guidelines and best practices for different mobile platforms (iOS, Android)
  • Experience designing user interfaces for digital product development, including effectively using colour, typography, layout, iconography, and motion.
  • Experience in interaction design work, sketches, storyboards, prototypes, and visual design. We would be interested in seeing examples of these in your portfolio.
  • Appreciation of design systems
  • Experience collaborating with designers, developers & QA to bring products to life.
  • Good communication & influencing skills and the ability to synthesise different perspectives.
  • Although not a requirement, useful experience includes:
  • Experience with user testing/research and using data to define outcomes and measure improvements.
  • Understanding end-to-end UX/product design in a commercial environment - including scoping, researching, prototyping, and testing.

Benefits and more

We're offering a salary of £40,000 - £55,000, and a flexible benefits package to support your health and well-being.

Enjoy 28 days of annual leave, in addition to bank holidays and half-day closures on Christmas and New Year's Eve. Our Aviva pension scheme offers employer contributions ranging from 5% to 7%. We also provide Bupa Healthcare enhanced medical coverage to all employees, which includes support for assisted fertility, gender dysphoria, menopause, and period care plans.

But that's not all. We offer enhanced parental leave, a car salary sacrifice scheme, share-save options, and much more. When you join us, you'll also become an owner of Auto Trader, receiving an additional 10% of your salary in shares each year. This allows you to share in the value you help create, and you'll also have the chance to increase your ownership through our Save As You Earn scheme.

Our hybrid model, Connected Working, combines the best of both worlds – office and home working. With Connected Working, you'll have two fixed weekly office days dedicated to team collaboration. In addition to your fixed office days, we expect you to be in more than you’re out. You can choose the specific days that suit your work requirements, home commitments, and team needs.
