Job description

As part of our brand-new Children’s Services Education and Inclusion team, we are delighted to offer this newly created post, a high-profile opportunity that will have major impact as one of the most influential leadership roles in education on the south coast!
We are seeking an inspirational leader to join us in bringing together the following areas within our new Education and Inclusion division;
Virtual School
School Improvement
Skills and Participation
Governor Support Functions
This exciting new position will provide leadership and management oversight so that children and young people can experience ‘equity of opportunity and attainment potential’, through access to high quality provision. To achieve this goal, you’ll need to test your knowledge and skill as you plan and manage the Isle of Wight Councils’ responsibilities for the following;
Education of school age children, EYFS and young people.
Post 16 education and training.
Mainstream post 16 sufficiency and strategic commissioning.
Post 16 participation.
The September Guarantee.
NEET support services.
The Isle of Wight Council has recently embarked on a new phase of working, moving away from a ten-year strategic children’s services partnership with Hampshire County Council. Thanks to the hard work and commitment of all involved, this partnership delivered significant results, including our acclaimed ‘Isle of Wight Family Hub’ model, identified as a national trailblazer by the Department of Education. Now we are ready to reach new heights and we want you to join us on our journey.
Wendy Perera, Chief Executive, said:
"On the Island we are at a turning point with a new senior team committed to driving forward our vision, with a passion to support our communities into the future. Putting our young people and our community at the heart of what we do is essential to providing an excellent service for them."
As our new Service Manager, you’ll work across our wider children’s services teams to design, deliver and evaluate key strategies and construct key policies to underpin the work of the ‘Education and Inclusion’ division.
You’ll lead on delivery and development of our school improvement strategy, from early years to post-16 education and training (including maintained primary, secondary and all-through schools, special schools, resourced / alternative provisions, and pupil referral units).
You’ll also focus on increasing the attainment of vulnerable groups helping ensure the performance of potentially vulnerable children and young people on the Isle of Wight is thoroughly evaluated.
As our resident expert, you’ll be required to provide professional advice and guidance, to colleagues, councillors and key stakeholders, so you’ll need to be an inspirational communicator, able to develop and maintain constructive working relationships with schools, education providers, partner organisations, members, and directors.
Full details of responsibilities and requirements are outlined in the job summary, but applicants will also need to meet the following criteria;
Experience of working with schools, and ideally post-16 providers, to improve outcomes achieved by young people
Substantial experience of representing the council in demanding situations with stakeholders and partners.
High level of political awareness and ability to use this to solve practical problems.
Degree level qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent experience
Qualified Teacher Status, with relevant professional registration and demonstrable continuing professional development.
The Island received an Ofsted judgement of ‘good’ in 2018 and since then, children’s services on the Island have continued to improve, can YOU to take us to the next level?
Heather Morris – SEND Specialist Service Manager of Children’s Services says of the current service:
"The Isle of Wight is a lovely place to live and work, there is a strong sense of community on the island, where staff strive to support young people and their families to achieve their aspirations in life."
