Software Asset Management Specialist
We have an exciting new opportunity for a Software Asset Management (SAM) Specialist to join the Allen & Overy Belfast office. If you have three years’ experience in a dedicated software licensing or Software Asset Management role we would love to hear from you!
Technology Services
The Technology Services department is responsible for providing world class support and services to our business all across the globe. The IT Service Management team is part of Technology Services, and operates all of the IT services and infrastructure for the firm.
Software Asset Management (“SAM”) is a subset of IT Asset Management (“ITAM”) and the Software Asset Specialist will work with the Software Asset Manager to introduce a set of business practices for to effectively IT Assets and software licensing across the firm. This will involve joining inventory, contractual, financial and risk management responsibilities to manage the overall lifecycle of the assets, including tactical and strategic decision-making.

What you will do
In this role, you will assist with the management of the firm’s software portfolio and key third party suppliers, collaborating with internal teams/stakeholders such as Procurement, In-House Legal, Product Owners and Senior Stakeholders across the firm, contributing as a SAM expert. You will work in consultation with the Software Asset Manager to develop and implement the SAM strategy and processes necessary for the effective management, control and protection of Software Assets and their licensing, throughout all stages of the lifecycle.
This will include:

  • Enhancing SAM strategy and governance, reducing risk and maximising efficiency.

  • Acting as a liaison between IT and third-party software suppliers, handling complex license discussions.

  • Advising on software licensing to optimise existing investments, minimise risks, and guide new purchases.

  • Managing software vendor audits, mitigating risks, and ensuring timely communication.

  • Conducting internal software audits, generating Effective License Positions (ELPs) for renewals and negotiations.

  • Understanding complex license models across Enterprise vendors and assessing their impact on the firm’s strategy.

  • Collaborating with Procurement and Legal teams to improve contractual positions.

  • Interpreting vendor license models to negotiate optimal deals.

  • Collecting and maintaining inventory data from various sources to manage assets.

  • Ensuring accuracy of deployment and entitlement data in the SAM tool.

  • Analysing software usage data and communicating findings to stakeholders.

  • Implementing efficient licensing models for projects and educating Service Desk on SAM processes.


What you will have

  • A minimum of 3 years' practical experience in a dedicated software licensing or Software Asset Management role.

  • In depth experience of managing software licensing for a minimum of one Tier 1 vendor (Microsoft, Oracle, SAP etc).

  • Experience working within the professional services sector with an appreciation of the demands placed on support teams by the business.

  • Proven experience conducting detailed data analysis from disparate sources and the ability to interpret complex licensing models.

  • High level of personal credibility, impact, and influence with a proven ability to work effectively and persuasively at all levels of the business.

  • Experience of working in a global environment across international locations with an appreciation of multiple cultures.

  • Ability to plan, co-ordinate and execute short, medium and long-term initiatives to improve performance of processes for which the position is accountable.
