Job description

About the NMC

Our vision is safe, effective and kind nursing and midwifery practice that improves everyone’s health and wellbeing. As the independent regulator of more than 808,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have an important role to play in making this a reality.

Our commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion

The NMC is an exciting organisation with the ambition to be the leading healthcare regulator. To achieve this, we are working in an agile way that offers great opportunities for people with diverse backgrounds. We are committed to being an inclusive employer.

We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, marital status, pregnancy, maternity, disability, or gender identity and welcome applications from under-represented groups.

Details of our EDI work and plans are here: https://www.nmc.org.uk/about-us/equality-diversity-and-inclusion/

About the role

We have two opportunities to join our Public Support Service on a fixed term basis.

First, we’re looking for someone to join us to be the lead in relation to the needs of people in cases where there are allegations of a sexual nature, including criminal sexual offences; and cases involving allegations that there has been a breach of professional boundaries.

Secondly, we have an opportunity for someone to join us as a subject matter expert in relation to the needs of people with complex communication and specialist support requirements.

You will have responsibility for ensuring tailored support is provided to patients, family members and others involved in our fitness to practise casework, working with a range of colleagues and agencies. In your role, you’ll support people to engage fully in the process and ensure understanding.

A key aspect of the role will be to support people through the fitness to practise process, which will include supporting individuals to give witness statements and attendance at hearings.

As well as providing individual needs-based support to individuals, you’ll play a key role in advising and supporting colleagues in the directorate. These roles present the opportunity to work at the forefront of the development of our service, influencing ways of working and liaising with senior colleagues on key initiatives to develop our person-centred approach for the benefit of all.

About you

If applying for the role leading on allegations of a sexual nature you need to have a relevant qualification in social care, health, community work, criminal justice or demonstrable equivalent experience. In addition, you should have significant knowledge and experience of working with and supporting people who have experienced sexual abuse and trauma, with a knowledge of trauma-informed practice and a commitment to a person-centred approach.

If applying for the role to lead on complex communication and specialist support we require significant knowledge and experience of working with and supporting people who have mental health needs, learning disabilities and/or complex health or communication needs.

For both roles:

  • Advanced communication skills and the ability to adapt communication to the needs of the person.
  • Significant knowledge and experience of reviewing and analysing complex information.
  • Knowledge and experience of safeguarding.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, including sensitivity to the needs of different groups and a determination to ensure our work is accessible and inclusive.

Benefits

  • 30 days annual leave - plus eight days paid bank holidays
  • Enhanced Pension Contributions via our attractive Pension Scheme – with a basic 8% employer contribution as standard which increases up to 14% with optional added Employee Contributions
  • Life Assurance – 4 x current salary
  • Hybrid/Flexible working policies
  • Enhanced Maternity and Paternity Leave
  • 24 Hours Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Perkbox membership
  • Subsidised restaurant in our Portland Place office
  • Season ticket loans

About Us

Our core role is to regulate. First, we promote high education and professional standards for nurses and midwives across the UK, and nursing associates in England. Second, we maintain the register of professionals eligible to practise. Third, we investigate concerns about nurses, midwives and nursing associates - something that affects a tiny minority of professionals each year. We believe in giving professionals the chance to address concerns, but we’ll always take action when needed.

To regulate well, we support our professions and the public. We create resources and guidance that are useful throughout people’s careers, helping them to deliver our standards in practice and address new challenges. We also support people involved in our investigations, and we’re increasing our visibility so people feel engaged and empowered to shape our work.

Regulating and supporting our professions allows us to influence health and social care. We share intelligence from our regulatory activities and work with our partners to support workforce planning and sector-wide decision making. We use our voice to speak up for a healthy and inclusive working environment for our professions.
