Job description

About the role

This is the time for action – we need to move at pace and reform our energy system – to deliver energy security, to tackle climate change and to protect our people.

Reporting to the Head of Gas and Whole Energy Network Development (GWEND), the Stakeholder and Insight Manager will lead the development and publication of whole energy insights, exploring the interactions between energy vectors and use this to support NESO’s Strategic Energy Planning activities.  The role will seek to establish strong coordination and engagement across many of NESO’s analytical teams as well as external stakeholders. The transformation to NESO will include changes to our position in industry and our interactions with government, the regulator, and wider industry participants. This role will be key to forging new relationships and demonstrating NESO’s capability and credibility as a new independent and expert organisation.

GWEND is part of the Strategic Energy Planning (SEP) directorate in NESO and provides support and advice throughout both SEP and NESO.  The Stakeholder and Insights Manager will ensure that all stakeholder engagement and insight production is coordinated with other similar SEP and NESO activities, will act as a ‘go-to’ resource for internal and external stakeholders’ understanding of the whole energy system and how the whole energy system is considered within GWEND, SEP (including RESP and SSEP) and NESO.

This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

About us

As Great Britain’s electricity system operator (ESO), we sit at the heart of the electricity system, using our outstanding engineering and commercial expertise to balance electricity supply and demand. Ultimately, we keep the electricity flowing directly to where it’s needed, second by second.

Becoming the National Energy System Operator

In Summer of 2024, the ESO will transition to becoming the National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator will be the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation will be set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As the ESO are today, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the development of strategic energy insights, advice, information, and analysis that address the most complex challenges and opportunities in network planning, particularly related to the decarbonisation of industrial clusters. These insights will inform industry and government so that optimal decisions are made in support of the transition to net zero.
  • Manage the creation and publication of formal and informal GWEND publications, providing strategic direction and ensuring consistency with wider directorate and company publications. Ensure that insights are backed by robust models and analysis and informed by stakeholder engagement.
  • Forge and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders across all business areas, encouraging collaboration and a holistic approach to insight development.
  • Build strong and credible relationships with a wide-range of external stakeholders – including the energy industry (supply, demand and networks), government and regulators.
  • Field, read, understand, file, and extract understanding and intelligence from various industry publications and external stakeholders’ studies and report. Provide relevant briefing to the Head of GWEND on relevant topics, and ensure relevant intelligence is shared across SEP Senior Management.
  • Deputise for the Head of GWEND across various forums.

  • Develop and deliver the stakeholder engagement plan both internally and externally with a particular focus on identifying, highlighting, and prioritising the external engagement agenda for GWEND.
  • Translate expert analysis into value-adding insight to inform leadership's decision making, advice and positions on key topics concerning network planning and key economic, environmental, and social considerations.
  • Support the implementation of the Whole Energy Strategic Network Planning function, taking a lead on activities to establish and expand the team. This may involve supporting team capability development, defining ways of working, and suggesting appropriate tools and frameworks for developing insights.

About you

  • Understanding of the energy sector - knowledge of the structure, regulatory environment and the short and long-term issues affecting the industry.
  • Understanding of network planning and design – including the ability to think holistically across energy vectors to bring together a whole energy systems approach.
  • Stakeholder management experience – including an understanding of what make different stakeholders tick - government, regulator, and various industry stakeholders.
  • A deep understanding of one or more elements of the whole energy system from a technical perspective (i.e. engineering, economics).   Whilst economics or engineering academic qualifications are attractive, other academic disciplines (for example, mathematics, physical sciences, IT/computing, business/finance, geo-sciences, social sciences, law, and politics) provide other skills which are just as important to understanding the whole energy system and the energy transition, so we welcome applications regardless of academic discipline.  Also, ‘deep understanding’ could be a vertical understanding – e.g. knowledge of a specific piece of equipment, process or system, or it could be a cross-cutting, horizontal understanding – e.g. knowledge of how different energy vectors interact physically or commercially.
  • Ability to communicate effectively up to the most senior levels of the organisation and with external bodies, partners, and regulators.
  • Ability to translate complex data and analysis into value-adding insights, commentary, and recommendations that inform decision-making and action. Ability to interpret complex multi-dimensional technical and/or network-based analysis into clear and simple insights
  • Ability to manage and steer multi-disciplinary analytical teams to deliver high quality outputs to committed timescales.

We welcome applications from people who do not tick every box.  As we grow our capabilities and establish NESOs remit, NESO and SEP are dynamic and reasonably fast-paced environments.  Diversity of thought is important, especially as we grow across different energy vectors.  Also important to us is the ability to communicate, to empathise, and to understand – as these values are often more important for successful leadership and influencing than analytics alone.

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £65,000 - £78,000pa – dependent on experience and capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance, 28 days annual leave as standard, and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.

As we work towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more affordable future for all, we also work towards creating a place for our teammates to belong, with professional and personal growth and positive well-being.

  • Full support and career-development resources to expand your skills, enhance your expertise, and maximise your potential along your career journey.
  • A diverse and inclusive community of belonging, where teammates are empowered to bring ideas to the table.
  • Generous Total Rewards Plan – comprising of health, finance and wealth, work/life balance, and career benefits.

More Information

This role closes on 21st April 2024 at 23:59, however we encourage candidates to submit their application as early as possible and not wait until the published closing date as this can vary.

We work towards the highest standards in everything we do, including how we support, value and develop our people. Our aim is to encourage and support employees to thrive and be the best they can be. We celebrate the difference people can bring into our organisation, and welcome and encourage applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds, and offer flexible and tailored support, at home and in the office.

We're committed to building a workforce that represents the communities we serve, and a working environment in which each individual feels valued, respected, fairly treated, and able to reach their full potential.
