Job description

Christ Church invites applications for a fixed-term Stipendiary Lecturership in French. This is a temporary, fixed-term position to fulfil the college teaching need arising from Professor Jennifer Yee’s undergraduate teaching remission during the academic years 2024-25 and 2025-26, and her sabbatical in 2026-27. Therefore, the appointment carries with it no expectation of permanent employment at Christ Church. Christ Church currently admits nine students per year to read straight Modern Languages, with additional students studying Modern Languages along with one of the joint schools. The appointee will join the Modern Languages tutors in French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish, and will have partial responsibility for overseeing the teaching of French at Christ Church. The successful candidate will deliver 10 hours of teaching per week, averaged over the three eight-week terms of each academic year. Some of this teaching will be tutorial teaching, while some will involve small-group language teaching. The College operates a ‘weighted hours’ scheme, under which a one-to-one tutorial counts as one stint hour, a double tutorial as 1.25 hours; a triple as 1.5 hours. Tutorials consist of an hour of academic discussion between tutor and students, and tutors are expected to mark written work as part of the tutorials and language classes. The ideal candidate will hold a doctorate or be close to completion in French or a related field. They will have evidence of the skills for successful tutorial teaching, including the ability to explain problems and ideas lucidly, listen to students’ questions and views sympathetically, and enthuse and inspire them. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the ability to teach the French language to a high level and achievement or potential (commensurate with stage of career) in a research specialism which will enable the provision of research-informed teaching. The post is offered on a Fixed-Term basis, from 1 October 2024 to 30th September 2027. Salary is on the scale of £25,406 - £28,305 (current rates) per annum, according to qualifications and experience. New appointments are usually made at the first point of the scale. Further particulars, including instructions about how to apply, may be downloaded via clicking the 'Apply' button above. The deadline for applications is 12 noon on Monday 19th February 2024. Christ Church is committed to equality and we value the diversity of our staff and students. It is our policy and practice that entry into employment and progression within employment will be determined only by criteria which are related to the duties of a particular post and the relevant salary scale. No applicant or member of staff will be treated less favourably than another because of their age, disability, ethnicity, marital or civil partnership status, parental status, religion or belief, gender, or sexual orientation.
