Experimental Toxicology:

Our Team provides essential advice to various stakeholders, including government bodies, local authorities and the public. Our research focus is on is assessing potential health risks from environmental hazards whether they’re chemicals, airborne particles or bioaerosols. Our cutting-edge multidisciplinary research and expertise supports chemical regulation and policy development to safeguard public health.

Analytical Toxicology:

Our Team dives into experimental activities using mass spectrometry techniques to uncover exposures to chemicals, toxicants, nanoparticles, bioaerosols or toxic elements. We embark on metabolomic studies to decode the intricate effects of environmental exposures on human health. We play a pivotal role in chemical incidents and emergencies, providing analytical and bioinformatics support when it matters most.

Job description

Responsibilities section:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Support research projects run by the Toxicology department. One post will focus on sample processing and chemical analysis. The other on aerosol production and measurement.
  • Undertake technical and administrative work including managing laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Support health and safety by maintaining risk assessment documentation
  • Utilize advanced IT software for data analysis and record keeping

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of no more than 1000 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the essential criteria (for full details of all essential criteria please refer to the attached job description):

Essential

  • Science degree or its equivalent, or broad experience in the scientific support of services or projects.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office packages, especially Word, and Excel
  • Ability to communicate effectively, formally, informally, orally and in writing, to include presenting information
  • Technical competence in taking measurements coupled with good numerate ability.
  • Capable of working accurately and consistently in setting up equipment and in making complex measurements

Desirable

  • Ability to observe and question to gather information and sift it to disregard the irrelevant and identify key issues
  • Ability to assess complex situations and interpret detailed documents
  • Knowledge of basic statistical techniques for experimental data analysis
  • Awareness of the effects of the environment on public health

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

You will be required to complete an application form. This will be assessed in line with the full list of essential criteria as detailed in the attached job description – please do provide evidence of how you meet this.

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to an interview.

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW

This competition will involve a face-to-face interview.

As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification.

Your Statement of Suitability should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).

You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history.

The Competency based framework will be used to assess and recruit the most suitable candidate. The following behaviours will be used at the interview:
