Job description

Surgical First Assistant 

Location - Ilford IG3 8YY (Sponsership Available)

Key Responsibilities

The role has management, clinical, teaching and staff development responsibilities:

Management and leadership

  • To take day to day responsibility for ensuring an efficient, effective and safe service is delivered, ensuring effective communication in all aspects of performance
  • Demonstrate advanced leadership skills and the ability to delegate and assess staff performance and be able to carry out appraisals and set objectives. Be actively involved in induction of new staff
  • Train staff and carry out regular updates for emergency procedures
  • To be responsible for the management and effective use of personnel and surgical consumables within the specialty to provide an efficient surgical service to the users
  • In conjunction with the Theatre Manager to develop the theatre service, looking to develop new and more efficient ways of working getting best use of theatre resources. Ensuring start and finish times support efficient throughput whilst ensuring a quality patient journey
  • Respond to patient feedback by reviewing process and pathways
  • To work closely with the Outpatient/OPAT department team to ensure the patient preoperative assessment supports the delivery of patient care, and efficient use of theatre time
  • Participate in Audit processes and staff appraisal
  • To lead, motivate and develop staff and encourage harmonious working relationships and professional rapport inside and outside the department, with other disciplines and departments
  • Develop and implement procedure specific information sheets
  • To participate in the risk management strategy and ensure that all Health and Safety and COSHH requirements are met
  • Participate in maintaining standards of infection prevention and control principles
  • To ensure all accidents and incidents are reported to the Theatre Manager and participate in investigations as required
  • To ensure that stock levels and consignment are managed appropriately and fall within agreed budget targets
  • Ensure staff work to high standards, to local policy and procedures and national guidelines
  • To ensure equipment and instrumentation are maintained and in good working order
  • Review instrument needs and be involved in business planning for instruments and equipment
