Permanent, Full time, 37 hours per week

Band 6 - £41,732 to £46.974 per annum

About the Post

The University of Suffolk holds a vital academic and economic position within the eastern region; coupled with a commitment to ensure the protection of the condition of our environment through the pursuit of excellence in social and corporate responsibility. Over the last few years, we have become a recognised regional leader in Sustainability, and we are now in the process of a deeper organisational transformation as we look to embed sustainable development at the centre of all our decision making and operations. We are delighted therefore to be recruiting for a dynamic and innovative individual with extensive knowledge of sustainability, to join our Estates Team on the next stages of this journey.

Reporting to the Head of Strategic Estates Management you will manage and monitor our policies, procedures and performance, whilst providing line management and directional support to our sustainability operational team. Particularly key to this role is the further development and delivery of the University’s approach to the student experience and carbon management. Decarbonisation is a key strategic priority for the University and we will look to you to establish systems and robust data reporting of Scope 3’s in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and/or Science Based Target and additional ESG requirements. Our collaborations are also of great importance to us, so you will be required on occasion, to provide support on a variety of projects for the University working with both academic colleagues and influential external organisational partners.

About the Team

Our award-winning, fast paced Sustainability Team sits within the Estates Directorate delivering operational support and guidance to the University in the following areas:

  • Legislative compliance
  • Energy Management and utilities monitoring
  • Waste Management
  • Travel and Transport
  • Grounds habitats
  • Specialist advisory support on asset procurement and small to medium sized project works
  • Student experience and engagement

The sustainability team currently has 3 full time staff. Your two direct reports are the:

  • Waste and Travel Coordinator
  • Sustainability Co-ordinator

About You

You bring a proven history of supporting the formulation and execution of policies, resulting in significant operational and cultural transformations within large, intricate organisations. Essential to this role are robust project management capabilities and a confident aptitude for working with, analysing, and presenting data. Your effective communication skills are crucial for collaborative engagement with a diverse spectrum of senior colleagues, as well as serving as an external representative for the University.

You will work collaboratively across the organisation to develop plans to deliver our ambitious sustainability targets, provide expertise and positive challenge to ensure we achieve our targets, grow our external profile and reputation in this area, and ensure we are collecting and monitoring the data we need to track our progress.

You will have the confidence to lead the Sustainability team in working with our whole staff and student community to build a culture where everybody contributes to positive sustainability outcomes and understands their impact. Above all, you will make things happen.

Benefits

  • Generous annual leave entitlement of 30 days for Bands 5, plus 8 bank holidays and any university closure days.
  • Agile and flexible working in line with business need, including family friendly policies.
  • We offer a competitive pension scheme through USS.
  • Staff discounts at a number of local amenities.
  • Discounted membership at various Ipswich Fit sites: unlimited access to gyms, swimming lanes, fitness classes and discounted racket sports.
  • We offer up to a 100% fee waiver for staff approved to study a UoS undergraduate or postgraduate course, subject to a set of criteria and conditions.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Electric vehicle salary sacrifice.
  • Wellbeing programmes.
  • Staff recognition annual awards.
