Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate English Teacher to join our team. As an English Teacher, you will be responsible for creating a positive and engaging learning environment for students. You will develop and implement lesson plans, assess student progress, and provide feedback to students and parents/guardians. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, a strong knowledge of English language and literature, and a passion for teaching.
Exercise of general professional duties
Carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, under the reasonable direction of the Head.
Professional duties
The following duties are deemed to be included in the professional duties which a teacher is required to perform:
Teaching
- having regard to the curriculum for the school (which includes the EYFS, National Curriculum, Common Entrance and Common Academic Scholarship syllabuses), and with a view to promoting the development of the abilities and aptitudes of the pupils in any class or group assigned;
- planning and preparing schemes of work and lessons;
- having regard to the school policies relating to teaching and learning, e.g. presentation policy, marking policy, teaching and learning policy;
- establishing and maintaining a working atmosphere conducive to learning by setting high expectations for pupils’ behaviour and maintaining good discipline in accordance with the behaviour policy.
- using teaching methods, resources and approaches which sustain progress and interest, matching these to the pupils being taught, so that pace, challenge and motivation are maintained.
- teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere;
- ensuring effective teaching of whole classes, groups or individuals within a whole class setting, so that learning objectives are met and best use is made of teaching time;
- setting high expectations for all pupils notwithstanding individual differences including gender or cultural backgrounds.
- creating a classroom environment which celebrates supports and extends opportunities for learning.
- Adapting tasks and work to ensure that all pupils can achieve;
- assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils;
- develop an effective partnership with parents and help them understand how they can support their child’s learning and personal development;
- Use external and internal data to inform teaching and learning.
ii. Other activities
- follow the school’s Child Protection Policy and Procedures to ensure the safeguarding of pupils.
- promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned;
- support pupils who may be allocated to you as form tutor, fulfilling duties as directed;
- providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education;
- making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils;
- administering standardised assessments according to subject requirements;
- communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils;
- communicating and co-operating with persons or bodies outside the school;
- participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above;
- demonstrating interest and support to colleagues and pupils by attending school functions which occur from time to time in the evenings and at weekends, e.g. Carol Service, school plays, Open Days etc.
- contributing to the school termly magazine with appropriate news, articles and photographs, showcasing activities, experiences and achievements of the children and any other areas of responsibility.
- taking part in the rota for breaks, lunchtime, and after school clubs and duties across the school day
- actively promoting the fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs;
- valuing diversity and showing understanding of the protected characteristics as set out in the Equality Act, 2010
- create high quality classroom displays for the subject areas taught to stimulate, support and inspire pupils;
- respect and maintain confidentiality in relation to children, families and staff.
- be a committed and active member of the staff team and school community.
- be an ambassador for the school, including in the wider community.
iii. Assessments and reports
- providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils and attendance at parent-teacher meetings twice each year;
- writing or contributing to termly reports for parents.
iv. Performance Management
- participating in performance management arrangements;
v. Review, induction, further training and development
- reviewing from time to time methods of teaching and programmes of work;
- participating in arrangements for further training and professional development as such including undertaking training and professional development which aim to meet needs identified in statements of objectives or in performance management
- in the case of serving an induction period, participating in arrangements for supervision and training;
vi. Educational methods
- co-operating with the Head and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements;
vii. Discipline, health and safety
- maintaining good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere, including completing the appropriate risk assessments when required and driving the school minibus with regard to the laws laid down within the Highway Code;
viii. Staff meetings
- participating in meetings at the school which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements;
ix. Cover
- supervising and so far as practicable teaching any pupils where the person timetabled to take the class is not available to do so;
x. External examinations
- participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for external examinations, assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations and recording and reporting such assessments; and participating in arrangements for pupil’s presentation for, and conducting, such examinations;
xi. Administration
- participating in administrative and organisational tasks, including the direction or supervision of persons providing support for the teachers in the school;
- attending assemblies, registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils, whether these duties are to be performed before, during or after school sessions.
xii. Staff Handbook
- Having regard for the Staff Handbook and familiarity with its contents;
Safeguarding & Child Protection
- The post holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible or with whom they come into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the school’s safeguarding policy statement at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school, they must report any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
2. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and extend the teaching of English and History, working with the Director of Studies to implement curricula for Years 9-11
- Share good practice of teaching English and History with the SMT and other teachers.
- Ensure that IT is used appropriately with the subjects of English and History;
- Support colleagues as necessary in the teaching of English skills
- Prepare pupils for exams and assessments in English and History following the school’s chosen syllabus and support them as needed in their journey to achieving GCSE qualifications

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
At least 2 years’ experience of working with pupils within a learning environment.
Experience of teaching English and History to GCSE
Attainment of GCSE grade C/NVQ level 2 or above in English and maths (or able to demonstrate equivalent levels of numeracy and literacy).
An appropriate qualification at ‘A’Level or degree level in English.
Recognised teaching qualification.
Good listening and communication skills.
ICT skills – able to support learning through ICT.
Working knowledge of implementing relevant learning programmes.
Working knowledge of the English National Curriculum.
Practical skills relating to planning and utilising individual learning programmes.
Understanding of equal opportunities issues.
An understanding of, and commitment to, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Experience in adapting teaching and meeting the needs of potential high achievers and those with SEND and ability
An ability to actively promote the fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
An ability to value diversity and show understanding of the protected characteristics as set out in the Equality Act 2010
