Job description

Abbey College Cambridge is seeking a Humanities teacher to join our staff, preferably with the ability to teach History and Geography at KS4 and 5. The Humanities team at Abbey College Cambridge is made up of 6 teaching staff, and covers a range of subjects including History, Politics, Geography, English Literature and Art. Subjects are taught at GCSE and A level (both traditional 2-year programmes and our 18-month course, beginning in January rather than September – catering for overseas markets with alternative timelines). We are also introducing Year 9 courses in Humanities from September 2024.

The Humanities department is a friendly and collaborative team from a range of backgrounds. The diversity of subjects, students and staff creates an open and engaging culture, built around mutual respect, humour and the sharing of best practice. The team meets regularly to discuss key elements of transferable teaching practice, student support and intervention. Differentiated resources and detailed schemes of work are available for all courses but individual teacher adaption is encouraged and welcomed. Internal assessments are scheduled across the year and support with the creation and marking of examples papers.

History at Abbey College Cambridge follows the Edexcel course at both IGCSE and A Level. At IGCSE, topics include World War I, Interwar Germany, the Cold War, and Medicine. Whilst A Level History covers Twentieth Century Britain and America, and Tudor Rebellions. A particularly popular aspect of the History A Level is the coursework, which allows students the opportunity to research a topic in depth. GCSE and A Level Geography both follow the AQA syllabus which cover a diverse range of topics from physical and human geography. At GCSE this includes Cold Environments, UK river and coastal landscapes, and managing food resources. A level options include Coastal Systems and landscapes, Hazards, and Contemporary Urban environments.

Our classes are generally small with students enjoying lively debate, researching around their subject and seeking out any opportunity to further their knowledge with many attending college-wide evening events and lectures. Guest speakers are a regular fixture within Humanities as well as a popular catalogue of trips. These are often run as cross-curricular events allowing students a broad range of experiences. In recent years, staff and students have travelled to the Houses of Parliament, the Supreme Court, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Tate Gallery, the Tower of London and a Geography field trip to Shrewsbury.

Qualifications and Experience

You should demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of Humanities and have a proven track record of successful teaching and inspiring students. You will need to be an excellent communicator, highly organised and able to manage your own workload.

You will hold a degree in Humanities or a related subject and ideally have a PGCE in Education or equivalent teaching qualification. You will be forward-thinking and innovative, exploring ways in which we can further support students and provide opportunities for all of our community to reflect the school’s values. You will be a highly motivated, and creative individual who has a passion for teaching and inspiring students to outstanding achievement.
