Mathematics Department
The Mathematics Department is comprised of 11 teachers. The staff are enthusiastic and work very well as a team. All staff are encouraged to be reflective in their teaching and share good practice.
During Key Stage 3 we teach students of all abilities. Classes are set according to their mathematical ability. Students of lower ability are usually placed in smaller classes. Tests are used in Year 8 to determine baseline standards and assist in target-setting.
During Years 11 and 12 students are prepared for CCEA GCSE Mathematics or OCN’s Application of Number Level1 and Level 2. Nine Year 12 classes are prepared for the 2-tier GCSE, with six classes aiming for Higher GCSE and the remaining classes entering for the Foundation tier. Students in the tenth class are entered for only the OCN’s AoN qualification.
GCSE Further Maths is offered to one class in Year 11 and in Year 12 in addition to the Higher GCSE Maths.
GCSE Statistics is offered to one class in Year 11 and 12 in addition to the Higher GCSE Maths.
Lagan College also offers CCEA A Level Maths and has seen a growing trend of students opting for this course.
During recent years the Department has been developing resources and ideas that have assisted in the introduction of active learning and the use of ICT, in particular the iPad. The use of mathematical games and puzzles is encouraged as a way of stimulating interest in Maths outside the normal curriculum. Student progress is monitored carefully, and tracking and target setting are important aspects of improving student learning.
