Job description

Our ideal candidate will be passionate about the power of education to improve the life chances of young people and a committed team player who is driven to raising attainment.

You will ideally have experience of teaching PE at Key Stage 3 and GCSE, experience of teaching, or enthusiasm to teach, BTEC Sport Level 3 and experience of, or enthusiasm to be involved in our sports leadership programme. Experience of teaching dance and Cambridge Nationals is desirable, though not essential. We warmly invite applications from ECTs, who are interested in teaching at A level with training and support, or teachers with a proven track record.

The full candidate brief is available here

The successful candidate will be joining a supportive faculty which consists of subject specialists who are enthusiastic, dynamic, and inspirational teachers of Physical Education. The Sport and Wellbeing Faculty produces exceptional results in local, regional, and national competitions. These extracurricular activities are a powerful feature of the faculty’s work and the person appointed will be expected to enhance our participation and the competitive elements of these activities.

Active participation in sport and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle are central to what we are trying to achieve as a school. The old expression “mens sana in corpore sano” - a sound mind in a sound body - is as true today as when it was coined in the classical world. We know that successful athletes are likely to also be successful academically. Commitment to a sport requires discipline and dedication. It makes us goal oriented. It teaches the connection between effort and reward. It fosters skills of co-operation and teamwork. It trains us to meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same.

The school’s sporting facilities include an all weather surface, grass football, rugby and hockey pitches, netball courts, tennis courts, a large sports hall, a sprung dance floor and a fully equipped fitness suite.

This is a real opportunity to contribute to the continuing success of the school.

Our vision statement 'learning together for the future' is evident throughout the school. There is a focused atmosphere that is conducive to excellent learning, an engaging and broad curriculum and an extensive range of enrichment activities. As a result, our students are well behaved, highly motivated and achieve high academic standards.

We are student-centred and our aim is for every student to experience first-rate learning and teaching. The school motto of 'Integrity, tenacity and service' is at the core of school life.

What our staff say:

"During my first term at Ecclesbourne I have felt extremely welcomed by staff and students alike. The school have been beyond supportive and encourage me to be the best teacher I can possibly be. Ecclesbourne inspires pride in its students through presentation, attitude and extra-curricular events. I have never known a school take so much delight in organised student-centred activities that, ultimately, boost the students' ideologies. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first term at Ecclesbourne and I hope that it will be the first of many in an enjoyable career."

The reward for working at Ecclesbourne is more than financial and we give back to our staff in terms of wellbeing, training and support. In addition, children of members of staff with a minimum of two years’ service at the school at the time of application are included in our admissions criteria.

Please note that the school is closed for half-term from Friday 16 to Monday 26 February 2024.

For further information, help with the application process, or to visit the school, please contact Tina Spencer-Keyse, Director of Human Resources, at or call .

Please do request a visit if you can as you will be most warmly welcomed.

Our preferred method of application is via the school application form, which can be downloaded and completed via the ‘apply’ button. Completed application forms should be sent to

Please note that we do not accept any applications via CV.

Our commitment to safeguarding: Our school is committed to ensuring the highest levels of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our students, and we expect all our staff to share this commitment. We adopt a fair, robust and consistent recruitment process which is in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education. This includes online checks for shortlisted candidates. All offers of employment will be conditional on a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, references, health check and, where applicable, a prohibition from teaching check.

The amendments to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (exceptions) Order 1975 (2013 and 2020) provides that when applying for certain jobs and activities certain convictions are considered “protected”. This means that they do not need to be disclosed to employers and, if they are disclosed, employers cannot take them into account. Guidance about whether a conviction or caution should be disclosed can be found on the Ministry of Justice Website and on the websites of charities NACRO and UNLOCK.

Our commitment to equality and diversity: As a school, we are passionate about diversity and recognise that as individuals we all bring something unique to the role regardless of any protected characteristics, which is why we treat all of our people equally, without compromise. We are committed to providing equality and fairness throughout our recruitment and employment practices and not discriminating on any grounds.
