Applicants must have 5 years residency in the UK as an SC check is required for the role.
We are looking an adviser to join the Forecasting and Response team, working in the Thames Barrier Control Room as a Duty Officer.
You will be enthusiastic, driven, and adaptable in this shift-based role, providing a 24/7 forecasting and warning service for the tidal Thames. Shifts are 12.5 hours and include nights and weekends. Pay is circa £52k – see below for details.

Key responsibilities include:
- Liaising with and providing advice to, internal and external customers, principally on the tidal situation and the need for flood defence closures.
- Issuing relevant Flood Alerts and Warnings.
- Working with partners over the operation of our flood defence assets for maintenance and testing purposes and providing advice to internal teams on the best tidal window for certain works.
- Updating and developing our internal manuals and incident procedures.
- Acting as Site Duty Manager out of hours (includes an element of solo working).
- Providing a monitoring and alarm handling service for the engineering plant on site.
The team 1
The Forecasting and Response team is a 7 person team, 5 of whom work shifts on a rotating shift pattern.
We are responsible for developing, managing, and operating a forecasting and flood warning service for the tidal Thames to protect approximately 430,000 properties at risk of flooding between Teddington Weir and Dartford Creek.
We also create and maintain many internal operational documents and provide technical advice to a wide variety of customers internally and externally.

Experience/skills required 1
You will demonstrate the attributes and abilities needed to interpret information and issue flood alerts/warnings and give advice regarding the need for closures. We are particularly interested in transferable skills as full training for the role will be provided.
- The role would suit someone used to working in an operational or control/incident room environment.
- Experience of Flood and Coastal Risk Management issues would be advantageous but not essential.
- Computer literate with excellent verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to work under your own initiative and make business critical decisions.
- Experience in gathering, maintaining, quality-assuring, and analysing data and information is desirable.
- Qualified to degree level in a relevant discipline such as hydrology, geography, engineering or forecasting, or have equivalent qualifications or experience.

This will attract an additional payment - full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
