HC-One Scotland is developing a Specialist Dementia Care Community (SDCC) at Darnley Court care home. Darnley Court has provided care for people living with dementia for many years but following considerable investment in environmental layout and design, workforce and L&D in Carmichael community, we have exciting new opportunities available for those passionate about supporting people who are emotionally distressed due to their dementia and require a specialist service to ensure their needs can be met.
Supporting people with dementia who are distressed involves ensuring that they have quality and purpose in their lives on a moment to moment and day to day basis through the delivery of personalised lifestyle support plans. This is achieved using a person-led, strengths-based approach with a key focus on life story work.
Person-led support requires curiosity, radical kindness and compassion and the attitude of never give up. We’re seeking colleagues who have the patience and knowledge to understand our residents’ needs by finding their ‘why’ and put a plan in place to support them to live their best possible life.
As an SDCC, Carmichael will become a therapeutic care setting demonstrating that quality of care and quality of life are of equal significance. It will provide a bespoke living environment embracing space and low arousal environmental design, along with enhanced staffing levels and specialist training for colleagues in positive approaches to behaviour, psychosocial therapies, de-escalation techniques and safe restrictive practices. The therapeutic ambition will be that people will be understood as having needs to be met, rather than being defined by their condition or behaviours thus leading to a reduction in their stress & distress.

Through our sector-leading, tiered Dementia Care Learning and Development programme, we will equip you with the skills and expertise needed to provide residents with the best possible support. Delivered through both e-learning and face-to-face sessions, the programme covers topics such as communication, empathy, relationships and inclusion in dementia care, including caring for those with complex needs, enabling you to enjoy a rewarding career as an experienced specialist in dementia care.
