Job Description

You will conduct a study on sustainable cryogenic cooling solutions for future high-field accelerator magnets in the framework of the High Field Magnet Programme at CERN.

You will carry out thermodynamic and fluid dynamic calculations to evaluate the feasibility of cooling options at 4.5 K and 20 K and their cryogenic distribution systems. These systems cover a multi-km accelerator while seeking to minimize energy consumption and amount of cryogenic fluid needed in the magnet structure and distribution lines.

You will also conduct a preliminary assessment on the effects of these novel cooling schemes on magnet stability and transients, as well as provide the basis for more detailed cryogenic studies, both at the level of integration into large-scale cryogenic infrastructures and at the level of local heat extraction from the magnet structure.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

We are on a Quest. A Journey into discovery like no other. Bring your expertise to our unique work and develop your knowledge and skills at pace. Join world-class subject matter experts on unique projects, in a Quest for greater knowledge and deeper understanding.
