Role Summary:
The Tooling Engineer is responsible for the specification, development and validation of Injection Mould Tooling. This includes new moulds as required during New Product Introduction (NPI), modifications and engineering changes to existing products, as well as supporting the manufacturing team with unforeseen issues, fault analysis and repairs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accountability for the specification, development, validation and approval of new injection mould tooling
- Completion of RFQ documentation, obtaining and reviewing quotations for modifications and engineering changes
- Ensuring that all mould tools are delivered to production meeting target cycle time, performance and quality.
- Ability to interrogate our customers' CAD drawings, understand specifications and ensure that technical requirements are clearly understood.
- To support Process and Quality Engineers during mould trials and co-ordinate tool maturation activities liaising with suppliers and customers as required
- Responsibility for tooling project management and budget control, ensuring on time and cost-effective implementation of new tooling and modification work.
- To conduct feasibility studies and review DFM ensuring that all issues are resolved prior to manufacture, taking account of past problem history and lessons learned.
- Review and of tool designs to XANDOR's tooling standard and approval for manufacture
- To conduct supplier visits and audits, ensuring compliance to XANDOR tooling standards.
- Supporting the factory tool room when required to resolve breakdowns and manage urgent repairs to maintain production supply.
- Ensuring that all related documents and drawing control is up to date at all times.
- To manage the transfer and provision of 3D CAD files to/from Sub-Suppliers
- To review, interpret and incorporate findings from plastic flow simulation (e.g., Autodesk Moldflow)
- Checking of tool designs for suitable moulding machine fitment and ability to use specified ancillary equipment, end of arm tooling etc.
- To manage/liaise with third-party suppliers as required to deliver advanced technical solutions, including material suppliers, hot runner suppliers and machine manufacturers.
- To attend regular project team meetings, agree suitable resolutions to engineering issues and agree appropriate actions and timing to resolve.
- Undertake special projects and business improvement projects as defined by the company Management team
- Assist the Sales department with Technical Support as required to secure new business.
Required Skills and Experience of a Tooling Engineer
- At least 8 years relevant experience within an Engineering/ Manufacturing environment
- A significant prior background in tool making, tool design and development of new injection mould tools
- Experience of tooling project management, structured problem solving and budget responsibility
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Strong personality with ability to build working relationships to drive and deliver results.
- Good IT Skills including Microsoft Office applications are essential.
- Ability to work independently on multiple parallel projects and prioritise according to changing business needs.
- Experience of injection mould processing and related plastics assembly processes would be highly desirable.
- A working knowledge of GD&T and statistical quality tools would be advantageous; however training can be provided in this regard
