AWE currently have an excellent opportunity for a Trainee Health Physicistto join our Materials and Analytical Science group, bringing their experience to AWE and to successfully play a key role delivering for our customers.
The role is based at Royal Navy Armaments Depot (RNAD) Coulport where the ABL Alliance, compromising of AWE Plc, Babcock Marine and Lockheed Martin UK Strategic Systems Ltd, are responsible for the day-to-day management of the naval base.
The Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group are part of the Science Resource function at AWE. We are responsible for providing legal and technical advice to a range of internal and external customers regarding health and safety in relation to working with radioactive materials and other sources of ionising radiation.

No other organisation in the UK provides radiation protection and dosimetry advise across the same range of applications and customers. Our work covers everything from radiometric activities to nuclear transport and working on national security operations. Each present their own unique set of challenges meaning that every day is different.
We are looking to recruit a Trainee Health Physicists (radiation protection scientist) to join our team at Coulport. A career in radiation protection is an excellent choice for someone who wishes to continue to use practical, scientific and technical knowledge and skills in a multi-disciplinary environment that involves both office-based and practical elements and where the ability to communicate with people from a wide range of backgrounds is essential.
The successful candidate will have either operational (worked in health physics, dosimetry, environmental, radioactive waste management, health and safety or associated fields) or have academic experience (a qualification/degree in science, technology or an engineering discipline). They will be ready and able to apply their experiences, knowledge, skills and qualifications to learning how to be a radiation protection professional.
Our two-year training scheme combines completion of training modules (titles include Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, Health Physicist, Emergency Response and Dosimetry) and on the job experience to ensure we develop world class professionals.
All candidates must be a British National, willing, and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
