Job description

Who are we?

Aurora is the leading Radiation Protection consultancy company in the UK, we are the best at what we do. Our Clients cover many sectors and we work with some of the biggest establishments in the world, including those who conduct high tech research to tackle the challenges of sustainable energy, provide lifesaving treatments in healthcare, and those who push the boundaries to develop engines to cross the finish line ahead of the rest. Our Clients are important to us and the service we provide shows we care, and we always treat them professionally.

What’s the job about?

Our Clients use facilities where there may be radiation present (radioactive substances), or they may have ownership of a site where radiation was used in the past. Our Team of qualified and experienced Radiation Protection Technicians, who are often referred to as Site Managers or Health Physics Surveyors, assess the radiological status of facilities we visit and then support projects to remediate and make those facilities radiologically ‘clean’. This may include the use of power tools and Respiratory Protective Equipment. This work helps our Clients comply with the law as well as clear facilities which then be re-used for housing and new buildings.

As a trainee RPT, you’ll be working with experienced staff who will help you learn the key skills. We appreciate that you’ll need a lot of support and training to begin with, and we’re committed to providing it.

Being a competent RPT means you will eventually deal with different people in the workplace, including other companies who are providing support on projects you are working on. So, if you like meeting new people and have excellent communication skills, you’ll fit right in. The key thing about working as an RPT is the need to work as a part of a Team. Good planning and personal management skills are very helpful.

You don’t need a degree in Science, though you will be dealing with a lot of technical information at times, so having an interest in Science isn’t a bad thing!

We will teach you how to use state of the art radiation detection equipment, these will be your key tools when working on sites, using them will feel like second nature after a while. We will also teach you how to conduct analysis in our laboratories. Taking lots of data and using it to make sound judgments.

Aurora is always looking for ways to improve our capabilities which is why we have invested in R&D projects. You’ll get a chance to help us with these projects. That could be looking at new methods for detecting radiation or finding ways of speeding up our processing of results. There’s no such thing as a silly idea, so if you’re someone who enjoys putting ideas forward, please don’t hold them back.

What’s it like working for Aurora?

We’ve reached the top by recruiting people who share the same outlook: that work should be a place where you enjoy what you do and feel fulfilled. We encourage our people to be in control of their development and ensure they work with people who are recognised as experts in the field. Everyone at Aurora matters, we’ve been successful because we care about our people, we embrace individuality knowing that collectively we form a strong team.

How would it work for you?

· Our main office is near Harwell (near Didcot) in Oxfordshire, which is where you will be based, but we do offer flexible working arrangements.

· Travelling is part of the role so you’ll need a full UK driving license.

· We would commit to your training as an RPT, so that would include arranging for your attendance on professional training courses, such as City and Guilds Radiation Safety Practice Stage 1 OR NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Radiation Protection.

· We would support your development at every stage so that you gain the necessary knowledge and practical competencies so that you gain the necessary confidence.

· We will support you in providing the relevant health and safety training, including confined space and training for mobile access towers.

· We also will support you in developing other skills such as time and project management.

· In time you and with more experience you will be providing advice and information to Clients on all aspects of radiation safety of the projects you are working on.

· Salary would be in the range of £24k to £30k. You’d also receive private healthcare after a year of service. We have a bonus scheme (you will qualify after the probationary period) so that if the Company does well, so do you.

What would be my responsibilities?

The work of the Trainee RPT will involve:

· Mobilisation of radiation monitoring equipment from Aurora’s premises in Harwell to Client’s sites across the UK.

· Undertake radiation surveys at Clients sites, initially under the guidance of experienced staff.

· The keeping of monitoring records and project logs.

· Using laboratory based equipment capable of analysing samples taken during your work, such as a liquid scintillation counter system. We will teach you how to use these.

· Supporting radiological remediation and decommissioning projects.

· Provide support to the management of the Aurora Stores.

· Support R&D related activities with other staff to develop radiation detection capabilities.
