Job description

Are you an experienced Custody Sergeant?
This is your opportunity to transfer your skills and experience to West Midlands Police. West Midlands Police is changing the face of policing, and you could be part of our major plans.
The West Midlands is a busy, urban area offering a diverse range of communities to protect and support. Our HQ is in Birmingham, which is the youngest city in Europe - with under-25s accounting for nearly 40% of the population. But it's not all about the second city... we cover as far afield as Coventry and over to where the Black Country meets Staffordshire as well as policing six Premier League and Football League clubs.
We serve 2.8 million people in an area rich in diversity, with around 30 per cent of its population from ethnic minority backgrounds. Our force values embody what we are, to apply you must have real passion for people and communities.
You will have a desire to work alongside our local communities to build relationships and make a difference to the lives of people in the West Midlands.
And we know it's not all about the job. The West Midlands is a great place to live too. The region offers great leisure, sport, shopping and transport options. Birmingham Airport is an international hub, served by most of the budget and major airlines. Trains from Birmingham can reach central London in less than 90 minutes and our Metro tram system is expanding too. There's always major acts appearing at our local stadiums and arenas, big name shows visiting theatres
in our major cities and vibrant nightlife across the region. There's five Michelin starred restaurants, dozens of country parks and green space to explore and cheap house prices too. Birmingham even has more canals than Venice!
Ensuring our Police Officers have plenty of development opportunities is high on our agenda; you can expect regular openings for promotion alongside the ability to learn and obtain new skills to further your career.
We particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups, which in CJS are women and BAME colleagues. We are proud to use positive action methods to attract and support these colleagues into the team and thereby create a more diverse and representative team.
You will be part of the CJS department and based at one of six custody suites, Coventry, Stetchford, Perry Barr, Oldbury, Wolverhampton and Bloxwich. Flexibility may be required as you may be requested to work at different sites dependant on the operational requirements.
Am I eligible?
  • You must be substantive at the rank you are applying for OR currently working on your Work Based Assessment
  • You must be transferring from a UK Home Office Police Force or BTP (or previously served as substantive in a UK Home Office Force)
  • Outstanding complaints or matters with PSD must be resolved before applying
  • You must have completed Custody Sergeants Foundation course and be an experienced Custody Sergeant.
Our training courses will provide you with an overview of West Midlands Police as a Force and how we operate as an organisation, along with ICT training on our systems and Personal Safety and First Aid refresher. Training courses are approximately 2 weeks long, and once completed you will be posted and land with your new team.
