About the role


Balfour Beatty are looking for a Shift Managerto join our Major Projects Team, based at Hinkley Point, Bridgwater.

An Amazing opportunity to work on a large-scale project!

At Hinkley Point Balfour Beatty are delivering one of the most complex marine engineering projects currently taking place in the world to support the construction of the first new nuclear power station built in the UK in a generation.

The project will see the construction of three tunnels under the seabed that will supply the two reactors at Hinkley Point C with cooling water and then discharge it back into the Bristol Channel.

Our experts will use state-of-the-art technology to excavate a total of nine kilometres of tunnel, which will be lined with 38,000 concrete segments forming 6000 lining rings. The tunnels will be connected to the seabed by vertical shafts and capped with large intake and outfall heads, each weighing close to 5000 tonnes, that allow sea water to pass into the tunnels. Both the concrete segments and the heads are under manufactured to exacting specifications at a purpose-built state-of-the-art facility at Balfour Beatty’s site in Avonmouth, Bristol.

As a Shift Manager, you will manage the construction engineering team for delivery to time, quality and budget of all technical information necessary for the construction. Organising and monitoring the programming and progress of the work sand associated pre-construction activities.


What you'll be doing


Other key responsibilities will be:

  • Preparation and review of method statements, risk assessments, inspections, and site plans
  • Supervise works to ensure all shaft and/or tunnelling works are conducted safely.
  • Manage the monitoring of shotcrete lining thickness through inspection of post shift as-built/visiting the works regularly throughout the shift.
  • Maintain good working relationships between client and designer, together with our supply chain.
  • Ensure drawings and specification documents contain sufficient information in sufficient time to allow the programme to proceed without delay.
  • Communicate with the Pit boss and Lead Miners to ensure full understanding of information is provided such as RESS and shift briefing/POWRA.
  • Provide accurate measurements for materials required for site.
  • Liaise with pit boss and temporary works designer to determine optimum temporary works solutions.

Who we're looking for


You will have the following:

  • Civil Engineering or mining qualification to HNC/degree level
  • Extensive relevant professional tunnelling experience
  • Valid suitable grade of CSCS card
  • SMSTS
  • TSTS
  • NNB incident controller & SELMA training

The role will be on a weekly working rotating shift pattern, Monday – Sunday, Days, backshifts, and nights.
