Our stunning waterfront campuses and multicultural community make us a desirable workplace for colleagues from around the world. Our reward and benefits, and ways of working enable those who join us to have enriching careers, matched by an excellent work-life balance.

About The Role

This post requires expertise in LatinLanguage and Literature. Specifically, we are looking for a colleague to teach intermediate Latin, Latin texts in the original and two Latin literature modules in translation, namely a first-year module on Ovid’s Metamorphoses and a module for second and third-year students on Latin Elegy. The tutor will also be required to contribute to shared duties such as taking on personal tutees and supervising dissertations.

This post is required to cover for a colleague who will be on research leave for ten months from September 2024 to June 2025. The successful applicant will have or be near completion of a PhD in a relevant subject area. The ability to teach Latin at all levels is crucial for this position.

Context:

Swansea University’s Classics, Ancient History and Egyptology subject group (CAHE) is part of the Department of History, Heritage, and Classics. CAHE’s twelve members of staff include three lecturers in Classics and a language tutor. We offer Latin and Greek at four levels, allowing students to study both languages from scratch whilst also offering students with previous experience a chance to study ancient texts in the original throughout their course. We work closely with the Classical Association and maintain close links with schools in Wales where Classics and related subjects are taught.

CAHE has an excellent record of innovative, research-led teaching. We are proud of our close collaboration with our student community and a long record of excellent NSS scores. We therefore seek to employ staff with a commitment to excellence in teaching. For those who have not yet gained HEA recognition, support for work towards a HEA fellowship is available within the university. We are committed to supporting the research of all colleagues, including those in teaching posts.

The University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity in all its practices and activities. We aim to establish an inclusive environment and welcome diverse applications from the following protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including colour, nationality, ethnic and national origin), religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation.

As an inclusive and welcoming workplace, we value people for their skills regardless of their background. Applications are welcome in Welsh and will not be treated less favourably than those submitted in English.

Welsh Language Skills

The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 - A little. The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon) and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1 hour course.

The University is a proud bilingual institution, our Welsh Language Strategy outlines our aspiration to promote the Language and enable our staff to engage with the language as an additional workplace skill and as a gateway to new cultural and social opportunities. Applications are welcome in Welsh and will not be treated less favourably than those submitted in English. Welsh speakers have the right to an interview in Welsh. Applicants for a role where Welsh skills are essential are expected to present their application in Welsh and will be interviewed in Welsh, if shortlisted.

Additional Information

Applicants need to provide evidence that they fulfil the essential criteria for this post.

The application should include a short statement (no more than 300 words) on which two ancient Latin texts (one prose, one verse) the applicant would teach students in the year following on from Intermediate Latin. The statement should explain these choices and indicate which specific editions they would use. How would these texts help students practice reading Latin literature in the original?
