About the Programme
The programme offers a professionally paid placement of 6 months, from May to November 2024
There will be a strong likelihood of a permanent role at the end of the programme
To support your transition back into the workplace, you will receive an internal mentor and a buddy for your day-to-day questions
You will benefit from Career Returners' Coaching Programme throughout your time on the programme
As part of the cross-company programme, you will have a ready-made peer support group of other returners re-entering the insurance sector
We are willing to accept flexible working requests
The opportunity:
Our underwriting teams work with global and regional brokers to deliver specialist insurance solutions for individuals, businesses, and professionals. Team members play a pivotal role in delivering positive customer outcomes, determining policy terms, setting premiums, and creating a balanced and profitable portfolio.
What you'll be doing:
Review and underwrite renewal and/or new risks using Markel's technical rating model and coverage guidelines
Manage a book of assigned risks in line with appetite, strategy, and business plans
Establish and develop positive relationships with new and existing brokers and other distribution partners
Support the analysis of portfolio data and act upon those findings
Work collaboratively with others including Markel Claims colleagues and other shared services
Our must haves:
Have experience in London Market underwriting or broking
Develop the ability to understand the principles of technical rating engines and monitor portfolio rate adequacy
Have knowledge of insurance policy wordings and endorsements
Use analytical skills to enhance Markel's underwriting capabilities (e.g., loss performance and underwriting efficiency)
Demonstrate a collegiate mentality and ability to work within a team
Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and a basic understanding of IT platforms such as email, Word, and Excel
You will be:
On a career break - for any reason - of at least 18 months (any PTA, school governor work, volunteering or similar is acceptable)
Eligible to work in the UK and satisfy any regulatory requirements for the role if applicable
