Job description

Looking to ignite your career comeback in a global organisation with an unparalleled culture? If so, we want to hear from you.

Markel is a global specialty insurance provider with a truly people-first approach. We have specialists across the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, India, The Middle East, and North America.

But it's our people and the relationships they develop with colleagues, brokers and clients that make us so unique.

And so, because we understand the value of diverse perspectives and experiences, we're looking for talented professionals who want to reignite their careers as part of our involvement in the insurance cross-company Returners Programme.

About the Programme

  • The programme offers a professionally paid placement of 6 months, from May to November 2024

  • There will be a strong likelihood of a permanent role at the end of the programme

  • To support your transition back into the workplace, you will receive an internal mentor and a buddy for your day-to-day questions

  • You will benefit from Career Returners' Coaching Programme throughout your time on the programme

  • As part of the cross-company programme, you will have a ready-made peer support group of other returners re-entering the insurance sector

  • We are willing to accept flexible working requests

The opportunity:

Our underwriting teams work with global and regional brokers to deliver specialist insurance solutions for individuals, businesses, and professionals. Team members play a pivotal role in delivering positive customer outcomes, determining policy terms, setting premiums, and creating a balanced and profitable portfolio.

What you'll be doing:

  • Review and underwrite renewal and/or new risks using Markel's technical rating model and coverage guidelines

  • Manage a book of assigned risks in line with appetite, strategy, and business plans

  • Establish and develop positive relationships with new and existing brokers and other distribution partners

  • Support the analysis of portfolio data and act upon those findings

  • Work collaboratively with others including Markel Claims colleagues and other shared services

Our must haves:

  • Have experience in London Market underwriting or broking

  • Develop the ability to understand the principles of technical rating engines and monitor portfolio rate adequacy

  • Have knowledge of insurance policy wordings and endorsements

  • Use analytical skills to enhance Markel's underwriting capabilities (e.g., loss performance and underwriting efficiency)

  • Demonstrate a collegiate mentality and ability to work within a team

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and a basic understanding of IT platforms such as email, Word, and Excel

You will be:

  • On a career break - for any reason - of at least 18 months (any PTA, school governor work, volunteering or similar is acceptable)

  • Eligible to work in the UK and satisfy any regulatory requirements for the role if applicable

  • Curious about joining a company that values diverse perspectives and recognises the potential in undiscovered talent
