Salary: £55,000 - £65,000 (dependent on experience) & Bonus Scheme
About the Role…
We have a new opportunity available for an experienced VAT Manager to join us at Asda Express (formerly known as Euro Garages)! Asda recently acquired a large proportion of our UK & Ireland estate which has led to the creation of a unique VAT Manager role that will be responsible for VAT compliance, advise, support and guidance for the Asda Express food & retail convenience business.
Working in collaboration with Asda’s award-winning UK Tax Team and Head of Indirect Tax, you will have the opportunity to broaden the scope of the role by creating and implementing strategies to improve processes, enhance systems, maximise compliance and minimise risk. You will also support in navigating the future VAT framework and structure for the newly acquired business.
We are seeking a motivated self-starter who can bring a fresh perspective to the role and has extensive VAT knowledge & experience. This is the perfect opportunity a VAT professional to join us as we merge with Asda and embark on a new and exciting journey to revolutionise the convenience market.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead the UK, Ireland & Jersey VAT compliance process including:
- Preparation of VAT returns, EC Sales Lists and Intrastat declarations.
- Performing reconciliations.
- Collaboration with other teams and departments to obtain the data required for all submissions.
- Ensuring compliance with Making Tax Digital requirements.
- Identify and minimize risks.
- Main point of contact for VAT queries & requests, providing extensive and accurate VAT advise, guidance & support.
- Review existing processes, policies and procedures and implement strategies for improvement / automation.
- Ensure appropriate VAT controls & frameworks are embedded and adhered to.
- Continuous review of UK indirect tax developments to identify opportunities for savings, indirect tax recoveries & identification of risks.
- Take ownership and lead significant VAT projects with the support of the Head of Indirect Tax, including:
- Working with advisors to agree a Bespoke Retail Scheme Agreement (‘BRSA’) with HMRC.
- Partial exemption review.
- Review of potential VAT claim opportunities based on ongoing and recently concluded litigation.
- Systems implementation and consolidation.
- Build and maintain relationships with key departments across relevant areas of the business.
- Work with external consultants to ensure timely and accurate submission of relevant VAT declarations.
- Support with VAT audits & compliance reviews.
- Collaborate with advisors to lead the design and implementation of a new VAT reporting tool.
- Assist with troubleshooting tax-related problems.

Candidate Requirements
- Minimum 3-5 years PQE as an experienced VAT practitioner with significant experience in successfully delivering VAT compliance for a large, complex business.
- Advanced analytical, excel, systems and reporting skills.
- Highly proactive, self-motivated and results focused.
- Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to explain complex issues.
- Excellent relationship building skills paired with commercial awareness.
