Job title: Vehicle Technician (Evenings)
Salary: £33,945
Hours: 37 per week (dependant on shift pattern)
Contract: Permanent
Location: York Road Depot, 225a York Road, LS9 7QQ

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a number of Vehicle Technicians to join our Fleet Maintenance team based at Leeds City Council’s York Road Depot (Leeds 9) although some wider working across the city may be required.

As a Vehicle Technician you will thrive on ensuring the Leeds City Council’s vehicle fleet is well maintained, repaired and safe and that this is done as effectively as possible, ensuring key Leeds City Council services are able to continue running to support the people of Leeds.

About you
As a Vehicle Technician you will bring to the role:

  • You will hold a full and current UK category B manual driving licence. Possession of a category C (LGV) & D1 (minibus) licence would be an advantage, but not essential.

You will play a vital role in keeping our front-line services moving. We have a variety of shift options within our team, which attract different rates of pay due to the hours/schedule of work. We are currently recruiting to our evening shift.  Hours of work are Monday to Thursday 15.45 to midnight and Friday 12.15 to 18.15.

About the role
These roles are integral to our Fleet Services provision which is responsible for the essential maintenance and repair of the corporate vehicle fleet, which is currently made up of over 1,200 vehicles. 

Duties will include maintaining the council's varied fleet of vehicles including cars, vans, tippers, welfare buses, large goods, refuse vehicles and many more.

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic and enjoy working as part of a team, with good verbal and written communication skills.

You should have a flexible approach to work and be able to use your own initiative to problem-solve and meet deadlines. 

You should take pride in your work and always strive to deliver high quality standards of work.

You must have a comprehensive toolbox and a full and current category B manual driving licence. Possession of a category C (LGV) and D1 (minibus) licence would be an advantage, but not essential.

Applicants should hold:

  • City and Guilds 4101 (Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair) or,
  • Repair and Servicing of Road Vehicles, 383 - full level 2 or 3 or Automotive Qualification NVQ level 3, or
  • Motor Vehicle Craft Studies, 381 - full part 2 or 3 or equivalent.

Job description

Job Purpose:     

To inspect, service, repair and maintain the Council’s fleet of light commercial, heavy goods and specialist municipal vehicles in accordance with statutory regulations and Council policy

Responsibilities for Grade:         

To inspect, service, repair, maintain and diagnose faults on the full range of vehicles operated and managed by Leeds City Council in line with expected timelines.

To carry out safety inspections on all vehicle types and record findings on the inspection and defect record.

To have on site and maintain a suitable personal toolbox and tool selection to undertake the inspection, service, repair, maintenance and diagnostics on the full range of vehicles operated by Leeds City Council.

To undertake training and mentoring of apprentices and trainees with all aspects of maintenance operation.

To accurately identify parts required and work with stores to ensure the correct part is purchased in a cost effective and timely manner.
Carry out accurate fault diagnosis of vehicle and specialist equipment defects.

The correct use and care of specialist tools provided for repair and maintenance purposes.

To undertake vehicle repair work onsite or roadside as required.

Ensure all work areas are kept clean and safe, carry out work area cleaning both pre and post repairs.

Reporting of and repair of defects revealed or observed during any repair process, including any instance where preventive work would be appropriate.

Completion of all current and future job related documentation required, including using and inputting data to current and future computer systems both fixed and mobile.

To carry out all work in a safe manner, observing all relevant safety procedures, including “on site” work where directed.

Attendance at any relevant computer, product or other training courses as directed to ensure capability to inspect, repair, fault diagnose and service the Council’s fleet of vehicle’s and to ensure the ability to use computer systems as required by the Fleet Maintenance operation.

To comply with at all times all requirements in relation to the use of GPS mobile workshop vehicles.

It should be noted that vehicle repairs and servicing will be measured against scheduled repair times.

Ensuring compliance with safety inspection regime for vehicle maintenance.

To ensure compliance of all relevant Health and Safety, Environmental and DVSA procedures and requirements.

To carry out all tasks in compliance with the authorities operator licence with regards to vehicle maintenance.

Ensure all work related documentation is correctly completed and authorised.

Ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory guidelines.

Ensure compliance with all pandemic and sickness requirements.

Use IT technology to deliver an efficient and effective fleet maintenance service.

Create good working relationships with managers and staff to ensure satisfactory service provision.

To contribute to continuous service improvements and to contribute to improvements within the department and the Authority.

To participate in appraisal, training and development activities as necessary to ensure up to date knowledge and skills.

To improve own practice through observation, evaluation, discussion with colleagues and appropriate CPD programmes.

To work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.

Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the service by attending relevant meetings, training days/events as requested.

Be aware of and comply with Leeds City Council policies and procedures e.g. child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications Required:

City and Guilds 4101 (Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair) or,
Repair and Servicing of Road Vehicles, 383 - full level 2 or 3 or
Automotive Qualification NVQ level 3, or

Motor Vehicle Craft Studies, 381 - full part 2 or 3 or equivalent.

Skills Required

Successful completion and pass certified of a recognised apprenticeship or approved alternative training in a motor vehicle discipline.

Ability to inspect, service, repair, maintain and diagnose faults on the full range of vehicles operated by Leeds City Council.

To carry out safety inspections on all vehicle types on the inspection pit area and record findings on the inspection and defect record.

Ability to understand the Council’s Customer Care Policies.

Responsible for self development in order for duties to be performed in an efficient and effective manner.
Knowledge Required

To be able to communicate in both written and oral technical language.

To be sufficiently numerate for measuring tasks and tool setting.

Minimum 3 year continuous period and pass certificated in either - approved apprenticeship or recognised training scheme externally tested and validated.

Driving licence category B

Knowledge of the Operator licence requirements of vehicle maintenance and documentation

Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures including risk assessment and COSHH requirements.
Experience Required

Ability to carry out service and repair work on all vehicle types as operated by Leeds City Council

Ability to carry out inspections on all vehicle types as operated by Leeds City Council

High degree of manual dexterity.

Three years continuous in commercial repair/service environment

Ability to undertake a basic level of metal fabrication

Ability to undertake a basic level of Electrical system repairs

Behavioural & other Characteristics required

Willingness to undertake any training as identified to improve skills, development and technical ability

Willingness to undertake any training on statutory requirements such as equality and dignity, health & safety and code of conduct.

Willingness to become a Nominated MOT tester.

Willingness to achieve IRTEC certification

Willingness to abide by the Council’s policy and procedures.
