Job Title:Veterinary Pharmacy Dispensing Assistant

Location: Northwest Veterinary Specialists

Reports to: Head Nurse in Oncology, Lab, Pharmacy, and Purchasing – Caroline Boothroyd

Job Purpose

Northwest Veterinary Specialists is a multi-discipline veterinary hospital with an opportunity for someone join the pharmacy and purchasing team. The successful candidate will provide a high level of pharmacy support for the veterinary hospital.

The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, used to working under pressure effectively with a high attention to detail, and in a fast-paced environment. We want someone to make an important contribution to the pets that are undergoing treatment here at Northwest as well as providing excellent provision to the clinical and non-clinical teams.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Providing a high standard of pharmacy support for all departments within the hospital.
  • Keeping health and safety of others and yourself at the forefront whilst dealing with all classes of medications.
  • Daily wholesaler medication order (stock medications, controlled drugs)
  • Ordering of less common medications from various suppliers
  • Sourcing medications from alternative suppliers as needed
  • Participate in stock take
  • Completion of VMD Special Import Certificates based off information provided by the veterinary surgeon
  • Liaising with clients requesting medications.
  • Liaising with referring veterinary practices over medications requests
  • Excellent communication skills and feel confident in speaking to other colleagues and clients.
  • Good time management to ensure efficiency within the pharmacy
  • To be self-motivated with problem solving skills and the ability to multi task
  • Excellent team work skills
  • Willingness to learn and pass on those teachings.

  • Accurate completion, filing, archiving of paperwork (batch number recordings, CD requisition forms, VMD special import certificates, written prescriptions)
  • Ensuring that the pharmacy is kept clean, tidy, and well maintained at all times.
  • Completion of monthly jobs (expiry dates)
  • Completion of weekly jobs (cleaning, maintenance)
  • Completion of daily jobs (temperature monitoring, cleaning, restocking)
  • Daily restocking of consumables
  • Pricing up medication for dispensing on Animana.
  • Safe preparation and dispensing of medication (oral, injectable, constant rate infusions, topical) requests received by email, written prescription, and over the telephone from within the hospital.
  • Postage of medications as required and pricing of postage costs
  • Remain an accessible point of contact for any queries colleagues may have with regards to medications and ordering
  • To attend meetings as required.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls to the pharmacy
  • Completion of the Linnaeus Dispensing Programme
  • To assist with the preparation and completion of tasks linked to the practice standards scheme

Desirable

Excellent IT skills

Previous experience within a pharmacy, Veterinary Pharmacy not essential.

Working conditions

  • Full time 40 hours per week on a 8 hour shift range of 8am-6pm Monday to Friday.
