We were the first to introduce a law to protect animals and have been working hard ever since to ensure that all animals can live free from pain and suffering. Through our campaigns we raise standards of care, and awareness of issues, affecting animals today. What a day might look like for you
Here at RSPCA we know it's a cliche but no two days are the same, as a Veterinary Surgeon we've added a short summary of what a typical day might look like.
The Hospital works directly with animals that are victims of cruelty and injured, helping those most in need. We work with RSPCA's Inspectors, animal centres and branches providing essential veterinary care and advice. Our workload has a large theatre bias and supports RSPCA Inspectors with cruelty cases. This is a very rewarding part of the job where you will make a huge difference to animals' lives that are in real need of help. This requires report writing and possible court attendance with full training and support is given in this type of work
Our invaluable Veterinary Surgeons at Birmingham Animal Hospital take a holistic and team-based approach to the individual animal treatment and recognise the importance of dedicating as much time as we can focussing on the welfare of the animals that come into our care.
Birmingham Animal Hospital is located in a charming rural setting amongst 70 acres of countryside, has excellent motorway access and is 20 minutes drive from central Birmingham. It consists of a friendly and enthusiastic team of ten Veterinary Surgeons, twenty RVNs and nine Support Staff. The team are extremely passionate about personal development, and always striving to ensure a thriving and supportive environment. For example we have 10-15 minute morning vet rounds everyday Monday to Friday for any cases the vets would like to discuss.
This position has arisen as we are expanding our work streams.
What makes a great Veterinary Surgeon?
Previous experience working within the charity sector or abroad in neuter clinics would be valuable. We work to a high welfare and clinical standard and know that we are working for the benefit of our animal patients first and foremost.
A good level of pragmatism and the ability to work effectively in a team. We have experienced vets who can support your skill development and gain experience across veterinary disciplines, including dentistry, surgery, cardiology, ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging and shelter medicine. You will be performing routine operations such as neutering, dentals, amputations, cardiac ultrasounds and imaging as well as triaging animals brought in by the Inspectors.
Recruitment process
Please note we will be holding face to face interviews for this role between 1st to 14th March at Birmingham Animal Hospital, which will involve;
- An interview (roughly 30 to 40 minutes)
- Followed by a tour of the site
- We try to provide feedback where we can following on from interview if you are unsuccessful
- If you would like to speak to a vet from the Hospital before you apply to find out more about the role please email resourcingteam@rspca.org.uk and let them know
We are really lucky that some of our roles attract a high level of interest and for this reason we review applications as they are received, unfortunately on some occasions this means roles may close earlier than advertised; so early submissions are highly recommended.
We do try to give feedback where we can but sometimes due to receiving high levels of applications, this may not always be possible
We recognise that a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential to achieving our core mission. For this reason we actively encourage a wide diversity of applications - in particular from members of minority ethnic groups, and people with disabilities - as these candidates are currently under-represented at the RSPCA.
Should you need any support with your application or interview process please contact resourcingteam@rspca.org.uk
