Job description

2024 is a big year for us as we turn 200 years young! We are proud of our long standing history in campaigning for a better world for animal  welfare. We were the first to introduce a law to protect animals and have been working hard ever since  to ensure that all animals can live free from pain and suffering. What a day might look like for you

Here at RSPCA we know it's a cliche but no two days are the same, as a Veterinary Surgeon we've added a short summary of what a typical day might look like.
The Hospital works directly with stray and unowned animals, helping those animals most in need.  We work with RSPCA's Inspectors, animal centres and branches providing essential veterinary care and advice.
East Winch is a wildlife centre and the largest rehabilitation centre for seals in  the UK, so our Vets treat a variety of species including hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, deer and many more. This truly does mean the work is varied, and pragmatism is key to treating such a wide variety of animals.

You can also visit the East Winch Facebook page to find out more about the work they do by clicking here

What makes a great Veterinary Surgeon?

Previous experience working within a similar setting would be valuable, working to a high welfare and clinical standard and knowing that we are working for the benefit of our animal patients first and foremost.
A high level of pragmatism and the ability to work effectively in a small team to make decisions on and undertake a wide range of surgical operations and procedures. This requires competence and experience across veterinary disciplines, including soft tissue surgery, orthopaedic surgery, cardiology, ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging, clinical pathology and shelter medicine. The Veterinary Surgeon at East Winch will also be responsible for the supervision of  Vet Nurses.

Recruitment Process

Please note we will be holding face to face interviews for this role dates TBC at East Winch, which will involve;

  • A competency based interview (roughly 30 to 40 minutes) with two panel membersFollowed by a tour of the siteWe try to provide feedback where we can following on from interview if you are successful

We are really lucky that some of our roles attract a high level of interest and for this reason we review applications as they are received, unfortunately on some occasions this means roles may close earlier than advertised; so early submissions are highly recommended.
We do try to give feedback where we can but sometimes due to receiving high levels of applications, this may not always be possible
We recognise that a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential to achieving our core mission. For this reason we actively encourage a wide diversity of applications - in particular from members of minority ethnic groups, and people with disabilities - as these candidates are currently under-represented at the RSPCA.
Should you need any support with your application or interview process please contact resourcingteam@rspca.org.uk
Our mission is to ensure animals have a good life by rescuing and caring for those in need, by advocating on behalf of all animals and by inspiring everyone to treat them with compassion and respect
