About Exeter School
Exeter School is the leading co-educational day school in the Southwest, educating over 1,000 pupils aged 3-18.
The Music Department is both busy and vibrant. We provide over 400 individual music lessons each week, stage 30 concerts each year and every two years undertake an international tour. Informal concerts for strings, woodwind, brass, piano and the voice take place throughout the year. In these pupils perform as both soloists and as part of small ensembles. The remainder of the concert programme consists of smaller chamber concerts in local churches, large termly events in Exeter Cathedral (including the Founders Day service and WaterAid concerts), and the Easter Choral Society concert. Pupils also perform regularly in Junior Chapel, assemblies, and in their weekly academic music lessons. It is expected that VMTs will play an active role in preparing their pupils for these events.
About You
Prospective applicants should be suitably qualified musicians and have experience of working with young people of all abilities, from beginner to Grade 8+.
VMTs at Exeter School are self-employed and are line-managed by the Assistant Director of Music. It is expected that 30 lessons of 40 minutes each will be delivered over the school year per pupil, or 20 minute lessons where agreed with pupils, parent and teacher. As well as the wider departmental responsibilities outlined above, VMTs should be able to prepare pupils for examinations of the ABRSM and/or Trinity exam boards up to Grade 8 and beyond and will be expected to support the practical side of academic music examinations (GCSE/ A level).
All VMTs should promote the musical ethos of the school and encourage the self-discipline and the social skills necessary for music making. The school has four orchestras, seven choirs, five jazz bands and several smaller chamber ensembles; VMTs should encourage students to gain musical knowledge and skills through active learning in lessons and through the experience of group music making. Support of ensemble playing, by being prepared to teach instrumental parts in lessons, is essential.
It is expected that VMTs will write an annual report, according to the school s report-writing timetable, and will offer to meet with parents on a formal basis once a year. Regular contact with parents is essential, and should the need arise, all teachers should report concerns to their line manager.
