The National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket is looking for an experienced Yard Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the historic Rothschild Yard and be responsible for the care and welfare of its resident ex-racehorses.
The position will also engage and educate the Museum’s visitors of the important role that Retraining of Racehorses plays in re-training former racehorses through daily behind the scenes tours.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- To assist with the management, care, exercising and welfare of former racehorses.
- To maintain the horses, premises and equipment to a high standard ensuring that all health and safety procedures are adhered to.
- To provide behind the scenes tours and assist with the provision of riding and re-training demonstrations in the arena to engage and educate the Museum’s visitors.
- To work closely with the Museum’s Events Team to support the entertaining programme of arena events.
- To manage arena hire bookings ensuring that the necessary paperwork and invoicing details are dealt with in an efficient manner.
- To manage the rota for staff and volunteers to ensure adequate cover is in place.
- To line manage, motivate and appraise the assigned staff.
- To carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Visitor Services Manager.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Experience of horse handling and riding of thoroughbreds.
Experience of groundwork such as lunging and long reining.
Experience of caring for and turning out horses to a high standard.
Good organisation and accurate record keeping skills.
An awareness of health and safety
A team player, with a flexible, can do attitude.
Excellent communication skills and confident in speaking to visitors
Awareness of general sensitivities or antagonism towards racing and how to portray the positive sides of the industry.
Understanding of British Horseracing and RoR.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary: Competitive
Hours of Work: Full time, 40 hours per week, on a rota system by mutual agreement which will include weekends and bank holidays.
Annual Leave: 28 days including public holidays.
Probation Period: 3 months
Notice Period: 1 month either side
