Job description

Salary: £55,000 up to £69,894 dependent upon qualifications, experience and licences (if held)

Contract Type: Permanent – Full Time

Security Level: CTC

We are the UK's aviation and aerospace regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

Ensuring the development of safe, effective and proportionate airspace and air traffic management (ATM) requirements for the UK is one of the most vital functions that the CAA provides. Aviation has always been one of the most innovative sectors of industry and this is never truer than today as we see the emergence of new aircraft types, new airspace use-cases and an ever-evolving technological landscape. As the aviation industry continues to push the boundaries of what can be done in the air, the CAA must be there to support it. The Airspace Modernisation Strategy (AMS) describes how we intend to achieve this objective.

The AMS describes a series of measures that will modernise and improve the UK’s airspace environment and, as an Airspace & ATM Policy Specialist, you will play an instrumental role in the development and implementation of these. Beyond the AMS, you will work alongside colleagues in the CAA, DfT and industry to adapt and enhance those aspects of the UK’s regulatory framework which relate to airspace, taking note of developments from ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and other international bodies.

A core part of the role involves working with national and international partners. This collaboration will allow you, and by association the UK, to better understand the challenges it faces regarding airspace and to capture best practice solutions. To support this, you must be able to effectively analyse, prioritise and utilise intelligence and information from a wide range of sources and combine your broad experience with an innovative approach to develop novel solutions to often sophisticated technical or operational problems. This will be further supported by your ability to encourage communication, develop positive relationships and engage with various stakeholders.

About You

  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of the UK’s airspace operational environment, developed through a background in flight crew or air traffic management
  • Possess a deep understanding of UK and international requirements and other ‘non-regulatory’ material relating to airspace
  • Be able to work on your own initiative with minimal guidance and have high levels of commitment, reliability, and flexibility, whilst being a great teammate
  • Possess effective communication skills, both written and oral, that will enable you to engage with and influence partners at all levels throughout the CAA and in industry
  • A problem solver who can listen, consider, and be open-minded
  • Able to take a measured and pragmatic view that is open to modernisation and innovation concepts, whilst ensuring a strong focus on maintaining or improving the safety and efficiency of UK airspace

Additional Information

For many appointments within the CAA, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.

To be vetted we will usually expect a reasonable period of residency in the UK so that meaningful checks can be undertaken. For this role this will need to be 3 years.

If you do not meet these requirements, we may not be able to accept your application.

For more information on CTC clearance please visit - Vetting explained - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

The CAA values high ethical standards and personal integrity among employees. If invited for interview you will be asked to complete a declaration of interest.
