This full-time position has a salary of UPSR £44,579 - £47,839 per annum plus TLR1.1: £9272 + SEN point.1

If you are a leader in education looking for a different challenge, the role of Area Lead forSpecialist Teachers for Inclusive Practice presents a unique opportunity to use your knowledge, skills and leadership experience to manage a team of specialist, experienced teachers and support local schools to promote inclusion of pupils with additional needs from ages 4-16 as part of a well-established and successful countywide service.

We currently have a permanent, full-time position based in Woking, to cover Southwest Surrey area schools in the boroughs of Guildford and Waverley.

About the Role

As a centrally employed teacher you will be working collaboratively with schools and associated partners; this will be an important part of the role. You will be promoting and implementing effective liaison with a range of professionals and services in supporting children at school.

As Southwest Lead STIP you will work closely with the Education and Inclusion Service Manager for the Southwest, as well as other central Education Managers, to ensure the development and delivery of an effective teaching service which promotes educational achievement, inclusion and wellbeing of an identified cohort of pupils.

Working with the Assistant Director, Education and Inclusion Service Manager and other Area Leads -this role will allow the opportunity to determine the strategic direction for the service. This strategic work will sit alongside the management of the South West STIP team as well as some personal direct work as a STIP teacher. The role supports schools in Guildford and Waverley boroughs and as part of a countywide service, you will attend meetings across Surrey.

Within your role as a direct STIP Teacher linked to a school, you will have the opportunity to support the development of a school's capacity to meet the needs of pupils with additional needs through systemic work, delivering quality training, supporting the SEN department, modelling group work or following a consultation model around a pupil with complex needs. Each new location gives you an opportunity to build effective working relationships which help schools to "narrow the gap".

Shortlisting criteria

As part of your application you will be asked to submit a CV and answer the following questions:

  1. Please confirm whether you have Qualified Teacher Status enabling you to teach in the UK
  2. Please tell us about your current experience, skills or knowledge of supporting pupils with additional needs within mainstream schools. Please also consider the impact that language or learning difficulties or behaviours of concern may have upon a pupil's ability to make progress.
  3. Please tell us about your understanding of current educational issues and how the inclusion of pupils with additional needs is part of your strategic planning and monitoring
  4. Please tell us about your current or prior school leadership experience and how you have developed the staff you work with.
  5. Please tell us about your current or prior experience of working with partners in education and what impact this has had on pupil progress.

In order to be shortlisted your CV and answers to the questions above will clearly evidence:

  • Degree level attainment plus PGCE or Teachers Certificate with substantial experience at a senior management level in a specialist area linked to the Code of Practice
  • Additional qualification in the management of children with complex language or behavioural needs or a commitment to achieving such a qualification
  • Previous experience of managing a school or STIP team, working at a senior strategic level and managing staff (including performance)
  • Detailed knowledge or SEND statutory guidance and knowledge of legislative framework relating to education and schools, behaviour management, exclusions, attendance, short stay schools and alternative education pathways
  • Current or recent experience of working in a mainstream school and sound knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of an effective SEND department with experience of successfully managing a school based budget
  • Your experience in choosing and providing a range of interventions to support the inclusion of pupils
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to have supportive conversations with school leaders which may include the need to rigorously explore decisions that have been made
