Job Purpose
Leading a team of Operational Managers across a defined geographic area you will be responsible for the successful delivery of the Area Production Plan and accountable for the annual operational expenditure budget
You will lead a team of up to 7 direct reports with responsibility for a total headcount of typically between 60 – 120 employees who serve around 600,000 households and businesses. You will lead on specific topicsor projects across your geographic area, e.g. Health and Safety Policy Implementation.
Job Accountabilities
You'll be responsible for working as part of the Area Business Manager's management team in the day to day leadership of the area, leading and inspiring the Area Production team to maintain and develop the organisational culture, values and the company reputation to ensure delivery of the United Utilities vision. You'll also be responsible for:
- Building, owning and delivering the Area Production Plan (covering all aspects of operational cost, service, balancing financial, customer service, regulatory compliance and people plans)
- Meeting customer and regulatory quality and service targets for Wastewater Area Production assets
- Implementation of company operational policies and management systems (e.g. site standards, security and emergency requirements) across the area
- Ensuring statutory maintenance inspection across the area
- Leading and directing the management of key operational relationships with a broad range of internal and external suppliers to optimise service, cost, quality and risk and ensure appropriate and timely response to operational events or incidents
- Driving overall performance of the Area Production teams to achieve continuous improvement
- Customer service issues arising out of the day to day operation of the Production Assets
- Ensuring the Health &Safety management framework is embedded in all activities and our Health & Safety belief statement is a reality
- External liaison with relevant Regulators as appropriate
Knowledge and Skills
To be considered for this role you'll need to be qualified to degree level in a relevant discipline with significant experience of leading and managing an operational business function with a demonstrable track record of budgetary management, resource management and business performance management. You'll also need:
- Extensive experience of operational planning i.e. translation of departmental business plans into Area Production plan
- Extensive leadership and people management skills and an ability to build, recruit and develop high performing teams
- Excellent interpersonal skills to manage relationships across United Utilities and influence key leaders at Director and Senior Manager level
- Resilience and ability to cope with pressure and demands of a significant operational role
- Sound commercial experience – ideally through the successful management of contracts with third party service providers or operating agreements with internal suppliers
- Change delivery experience – demonstrable track record of successful embedding change to deliver business benefits
- Knowledge of a regulated Utility company
- Demonstrable experience of successful collaborative relations to achieve area and divisional objectives
- Strong customer service orientation to be able to deal with a demanding customer facing operation

- This role requires occasional out of hours working aligned to the operational needs of the business
- Base location will change dependent on new county model structure
