Job Purpose
To lead and manage Assessment team
  • Responsible for assessment records in the Student Information Management System (SIMS), creation of student component assessment records, ensuring quality of data through validation.
  • Responsible for managing results processing, exam board records, and timely transcript release.
  • Managing change of results post release of exam board decision and processing the outcome of appeals.
  • Implementation to systems for policy and regulation changes relating to assessment, award and progression. Design and delivery of training to inform relevant colleagues of these changes.
  • Manage reports and data for Awards and Progress Committee.
  • Work with other Student Operations Managers to support and enable the Student lifecycle processes. e.g. progression, recognition of prior learning, programme operationalisation.
  • Support the University within the area of Education Services, providing advice and guidance, and supporting projects within Student Operations.
  • Liaise with and work in partnership with Student Operations Managers, and College Education Officers to identify areas where processes can be enhanced to improve end-to-end operations.
Key Duties
  • Manage the operation of the Assessment team; planning, organising and delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required.
  • Contribute to the long-term management of the department, interpreting strategies into work priorities suggesting changes to relevant areas of the academic regulations and policy.
  • Manage the performance, induction and development of the team.
  • Support and guide team members in welfare issues, escalating as necessary to specialist support areas.
  • Ensure the delivery of the team’s service, adapting these according to changes in workload and customer requirements, managing customers’ expectations through effective communication across multiple channels.
  • Develop networks across departments, schools, other universities and external suppliers to ensure the success of the team’s objectives and long-term plans.
  • Review existing processes and procedures, making recommendations for improvements.
  • Undertake the training of others in areas relating to the team’s work.
  • Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance.
  • Gather and analyse data to inform decisions, establishing basic trends and patterns in data and creating reports as appropriate.

Qualifications and Education
  • Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent work related experience
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Substantial experience of managing a team
  • Specialist knowledge of student record management systems, regulations, policy and processes
  • Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
  • Ability to communicate detailed and complex information effectively and professionally to a wide range of people
  • Proven ability to develop networks in order to contribute to long term developments
  • Experience of dealing with performance and welfare issues
  • Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
Planning, Analysis and Problem solving
  • Evidence of ability to solve problems using initiative and creativity; using detailed understanding of methodologies to select the right approach
  • Evidence of ability to plan the work of a team, over extended time periods, reacting to changes in workload and priority

Desirable Criteria
  • Postgraduate/Professional qualification
  • Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
