Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Greenspaces service of Leeds City Council for an Assistant Café and Retail Manager based at Tropical World, Roundhay Park. 

You must have the ability to assist with the management of the day-to-day operations of a Café and retail shop, including but not limited to; staff rotas, menu planning, ordering equipment and food along with stock management. You should have knowledge of food standards, allergens and health and hygiene relating to cafes. 

We are keen to see candidates with a proven track record of improving the profitability of retail or café facilities, along with experience of managing a team to deliver excellent customer care. Furthermore, candidates who can show innovation and initiative in relation to forward thinking retail ideas are desired.

Job Description

Job Purpose:

To undertake the day-to-day assistant management of a catering, retail and/or hospitality facility in line with best practice and as an integral part of the visitor attractions in which they are located. To provide flexible management and the provision of a high-quality catering and retail service’ at outlets which are the responsibility of the Greenspaces service. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To assist in the ordering and controlling of all stock required for the Café and retail operations.
  • To assist with menu compilation and costings.
  • To assist in managing and motivating staff, including ensuring that appropriate staff development is in place
  • To assist in the preparation of rotas and submission of staff timesheets.
  • To assist in the preparation of items for resale.
  • To assist in the responsibility for budgetary control of the outlet in accordance with Local Authority Financial Regulations.
  • To ensure the procurement of goods and services is in accordance with financial regulations, corporate policy and legal requirements
  • To assist in the planning and organisation of functions as may be required.
  • To assist in the liaison with clients, suppliers, and any other organisations in all aspects of the outlet.
  • To ensure customer focus and provide an efficient and polite service to customers.
  • To assist in ensuring the site is clean, clear and in accordance with statutory regulations. 
  • To work in all areas, covering commensurate duties as required.
  • To be able to work as part of a team and act on instructions as may be required.
  • To undertake covering duties for the outlet manager as required.
  • To ensure that the Food Hygiene Regulations 2005 are adhered to.
  • To wear appropriate protective clothing, as required.
  • To attend appropriate training courses / seminars as requested to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • To promote the objectives of the Greeenspaces service via the provision of a quality service at all times.
  • To ensure the operations always meet with the statuary regulations in respect to Health and Safety at work, Hygiene Regulations (food, premises and personal) Licensing Regulations and any other appropriate legislations. 
  • To assist as required in the management of visitor centres, shops, and other outlets.
  • Additional duties to manage café outlet / visitor centre /shop when manager not on site.
  • It should be noted that this job is subject to occasional changes to incorporate other commensurate duties and responsibilities in response to organisational change / review and to assist flexability. The duties outlined are not meant as an exhaustive list and will also comprise any other duties within the spirit of the post as specific by the appropriate supervisor.

RELATIONSHIPS      

The post holder will be responsible for support staff within the outlet and will work as a member of a small team within a catering / retail outlet.  There will be regular contact with members of the public.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS

The position will be based within one of our commercial outlets and flexibility is required to provide cover at any other outlet as directed.

SOCIAL CONDITIONS

Hours: 37 hours per week over 7 days – some evening and weekend working may also be required, together with regular weekend hours.

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: It is essential that the Candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post within the context of the specific role duties and responsibilities: Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate on the application form that they meet all the essential requirements.

Method of Assessment will be through one or more of the following Application Form, Test, Interview or Certificate.

SKILLS

Ability to communicate with a wide range of people individually, in groups and at all appropriate levels.

Ability to manage the day to day operation of the outlet in the absence of the outlet manager.

Ability to implement financial / cash controls.

Ability to compile and cost menus.

Ability to order goods as required.

Ability to supervise staff.

Ability to prepare staff rotas.

Ability to prepare basic ingredients e.g. sandwiches, salads and snacks and preparation / cooking hot meals.

Ability to work to strict deadlines.

Ability to undertake flexible working times.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Knowledge of HACCAP, hygiene and food handling regulations and the Food Standards Act 1999.

Knowledge of catering procedures.

Knowledge of cleaning procedures for catering equipment.

Experience

Experience of working as part of a team.

Experience of working within a similar environment, carrying out similar duties.

Experience in the supervision of staff. 

Experience in exercising financial / cash controls.

Behavioural and other related characteristics

Knowledge/Qualifications

NVQ Levels 1 and 2 in catering.

Experience

Experience in training and development of staff.
