About the role:

The Assistant Fire Safety Manager (AFSM) is responsible for providing support to the Senior Fire Safety Manager (SFSM) in relation to specialist Fire Safety technical and strategic advice to the British Museum (BM) on efficient and effective means to protect staff, public, collections and property from fire (and related flood). The AFSM will also enhance & promote the positive staff culture that affects thinking and behaviours about Fire Safety across the whole museum. The successful candidate will need initiative, determination and be a good communicator with the credibility to influence at all levels across the organisation.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Supporting the BM in responding to current and emerging legal and best practise requirements for Fire Safety at a strategic and operational level. Responding to the demand and challenge in supporting both ‘business as usual’ functions and emerging pressures in relation to Masterplan activity.
  • Assisting the SFSM to ensure that a robust framework is in place to support the management of Fire Safety issues across the museum.
  • Contribute to the other complementary functions within Estates and Capital Projects to provide advice on end-product quality (of newly installed and commissioned assets and spaces) – ie. Supporting the client-side handover and acceptance into service process.
  • Development of effective working with the Control of Works Supervisor and Coordinators within EHS and others within the Estates and Capital Projects department to achieve best practice and protection to life, collection and property during construction/maintenance related activity.
  • Working closely within the SFSM and other functions to advise and support on Masterplan activity in terms of design development, strategic advice and operational user requirements, both in terms of handover and operate mode.
  • Working with the SFSM on business improvement initiatives to support emerging continuous improvement exercises within Estates and Capital Projects.

About you:

With a general education and ideally educated to degree level, you should have specific fire qualifications such as CFPA Diploma and membership of the IFE or IFSM, or be working towards these. Ideally you will have a NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management and MIFireE.

You should have demonstrable experience as a Fire Safety Manager, ideally within a heritage or large visitor attraction organisation, including experience of developing policies and procedures and health and safety management systems.

You should have outstanding communication and stakeholder engagement skills, as well as a good working knowledge of Construction and Design Management regulatory requirements and permit to work processes.
