Salary: £61,882 – 68,400

Full time - Permanent

Start Date: September 2024

Matthew Arnold is a thriving community school on the outskirts of Oxford looking to appoint a new Assistant Headteacher with proven leadership skills who can further develop the school’s ethos where young people are at the heart of everything we do and leave us ready to take on the challenges of early adult life.

Matthew Arnold is an oversubscribed inclusive 11-18 school of over 1,300 pupils that serves a mix of urban and rural communities across the west side of Oxford. The school prides itself on being a high achieving school with increasing rates of progress for our disadvantaged students. This has been achieved by focusing on improving outcomes for every student and continuing staff development.

The school is part of the Acer Trust. All schools in the Trust play an important part in the success of the Trust and work together collaboratively so that each school in the Trust is a great place to learn and to work.

Summary:

The key purpose of this role is to continue to develop the positive school Ethos and Culture through the implementation of a clear positive behaviour policy based on relational and restorative practice, both within and beyond the classroom.

Purpose of Assistant Headteacher role:

Working very closely with the Headteacher, the Deputy Headteachers and other Leadership Team members, the Assistant Headteacher plays a key role in:

  • Co-leading the creation of the strategic vision, values, aims and goals for the school
  • Improving the outcomes for all students
  • Formulating and implementing the strategic aims and objectives of the school.
  • Establishing the policies and procedures through which the aims and objectives will be achieved
  • Leading and managing staff and resources to achieve the aims and objectives of the school.
  • Monitoring and evaluating progress towards the achievement of agreed aims and objectives, described in the annual School Improvement Plan
  • Oversight of the development of the positive behaviour strategy and positive behaviour policy strategy into Leadership of our positive behaviour policy and restorative practice including engagement of families and wider community and induction and on-goingtraining of staff and middle leaders (HL) in systems and processes
  • Strategic development, including monitoring and evaluation, of positive behaviour approach (all non-negotiables in terms of impact on learning)
  • Leading the development of student leadership and student voice
  • Leadership of the pastoral programme, including assemblies and tutor programme to explicitly teach and promote the school ethos
  • Leadership of extra curricular provision and enrichment-(with TLR post holder) to ensure a rich, diverse and inclusive experience for all students and as an entitlement for all that is celebrated and valued widely in our community
  • Identifying information gathering and analysis to support school improvement
  • Ensuring Stakeholder voice impacts positively on the school
  • Oversight of support to House Leaders, Curriculum Leaders and tutors in the strategic implementation of behaviour management policies and procedures
  • Ensure that positive behaviour and relational practice benefits students with SEND
  • Planning Tutorial, mentoring and assembly programme
  • Management of curriculum enrichment days
  • Management of extra curricular provision
  • Student council
  • To lead on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • To ensure celebration events promote the Ethos and Culture of the school, through the communication of the core qualities and personal characteristics
