Job description

Summary

Are you passionate about caring for our natural environment? We want landscapes with more nature, that are accessible to more people, and lock-up more carbon.

We’re looking for an Assistant Nature Conservation Adviser to join us to help deliver our ambitions for nature and climate, working mainly in the west of the Midlands region including Shropshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Herefordshire, and Birmingham.

What it's like to work here

We look after many important places for wildlife and people in the region from 2,200ha ha of SSSI heathland on the Long Mynd, to historic parklands like Croome. We look after protected species too, ensuring their conservation status is enhanced with the work we do. We have started over 8000ha of priority habitat restoration in the Midlands and East of England over the last ten years, and we will be starting a new ambitious strategy in 2025.

You’ll be part of Midlands and East of England Consultancy Team: a multidisciplinary team from climate and farming advisors to project managers and archaeologists, who provide specialist advice to the places we care for, to help make things happen.

Your contractual location will be at the National Trust property location closest to you, with the main office being at Attingham. but our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week.

What you'll be doing

You'll support our regional Nature Conservation Adviser and other internal consultants, in providing high quality Nature Conservation advice, primarily to site managers and our property teams.

You'll use your expertise in habitat surveying, mapping skills, and habitat assessments to help understand the biological significance of our land. Often supporting, training and mentoring other staff and volunteers to take part in ecological monitoring.

You’ll provide clear and sound advice on a range of conservation matters including habitat management and creation and produce habitat management plans to guide best practice on properties.

You'll use your experience of wildlife legislation and mitigation to assist and support properties and projects with issues concerning legally protected sites and species.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you’re:

  • experienced in ecology and conservation land management
  • knowledgeable about wildlife legislation (protected species and sites), policy and grant schemes
  • skilled in biological field surveys, including plant ID
  • experienced in using GIS and databases
  • an effective communicator, able to build good working relationships
  • good at listening, building trust and giving a high-quality service to colleagues
  • someone with an eye for detail, good organisational skills and able to work at pace and keep to time
  • a champion of inclusion, who helps support everyone to feel welcome

Please submit a cover letter alongside your CV.
