Job description

About the role:

The postholder will be working in the Exhibitions Department's Production team, the role is responsible for coordinating a wide range of administrative and technical duties. The postholder will provide support with the installation and dismantling of exhibitions and displays, as well as assisting in the delivery of construction and technical aspects of the Museum's temporary exhibitions both on-site and off-site, ensuring they are completed within the specified timeframes to a high standard and within budget constraints. The postholder will also be managing lighting, showcase, conditioning equipment (and others as directed), coordinating essential equipment workstreams with Exhibition project team members, wider Museum colleagues and third-party contractors.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • To contribute technical expertise and creative problem solving to individual exhibitions, working collaboratively within project teams.
  • Advise on technical aspects of exhibition presentation including, but not limited to, construction methods, materials, installation/dismantling, and health and safety.
  • Implement and enforce health and safety requirements, CDM regulations, and building regulations related to exhibition production as directed by the Senior Technical Manager.
  • To have up-to-date knowledge on relevant health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • To oversee Risk Assessments and Method Statements submitted by third party contractors. This includes monitoring completion, compliance, and submission of the required documentation.
  • Coordinating production documentation with internal colleagues, internal and external contractors to carry out essential and project specific works on-site.

About you:

  • Technical knowledge of demountable showcase systems, exhibition lighting and other exhibition equipment.
  • IT skills, including Excel.
  • Knowledge of COSHH, H&S requirements and other relevant regulations.
  • Set-works fabrication or senior design technician.
  • Museum, art gallery, commercial gallery, or theatre experience.
  • Previous stock control experience.
  • Demonstrable interest in aspects of the Museum's activities
  • The role is technical in nature as well as administrative, and knowledge of construction is essential.
  • Must be able to provide advice to senior stakeholders and work well as part of team; self-motivated and able to use initiative; good communicator.
