Job description

Hours: 37 Per Week

Contract Type: Permanent

Service Area: Place Management

Department: Traffic Management & Network

Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Highways and Traffic Group is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of people across our highway network. The district includes the thriving World Heritage City of Bath, beautiful countryside and villages, and the market towns of Keynsham, Midsomer Norton and Radstock.

We are seeking to recruit an Assistant Engineer to deliver traffic and safety improvements across the authority, deal with enquiries from the public and Ward Members etc., provide technical advice and support, and to progress Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs).

About the role

As an Assistant Engineer within the Traffic Management Team, you’ll be joining the council at an exciting time from a transport perspective. Aside from dealing with the traffic and highway issues which have been raised by the public and Councillors etc., we also design and implement schemes and measures which are identified on our annual Transport Improvement Programme. We are also routinely involved in the transport priorities and initiatives being delivered by other teams and partners, particularly those which require the support of a TRO.

With experience in Traffic Management Engineering and processes, the person we’re looking for will be keen to apply their enthusiasm to the work of the team, comfortable working on their own initiative, and have the necessary confidence to take ownership. A good understanding of the work carried out by the team is important, and knowledge of the application of Traffic Regulation Orders would also be beneficial.

About you

You will be well organised, able to develop and maintain working relationships, and be driven to succeed. You will also have the confidence to engage and inspire other members of the team.

You’ll thrive on finding ways to solve problems and sharing your knowledge and experience with others to help them develop their highway and transport schemes.

There is no requirement for specific engineering or transport qualifications as part of this role, although this would be a benefit. We are supportive of and encourage our staff to continue learning and developing.

This is a great opportunity to influence how the safety of our highways in Bath & North East Somerset continue to improve in the coming years.

Your main place of work will be the award-winning, modern Civic Centre in Keynsham, halfway between Bath and Bristol, easily accessible via car or public transport, with a train station 5 minutes’ walk away.
