The London Clinic has an exciting new opportunity for an exceptional leader to join the hospital in a new role, Associate Director of Operations (Surgical and Medical). This role is a key leadership and management position, working together with Divisional Clinical Directors and Nursing Matrons. We are offering a competitive salary of £105K plus a fantastic array of benefits.


Established in 1932, The London Clinic is one of the UK’s largest private hospitals, with 8 state-of-the-art facilities, and circa 1350 employees where we are dedicated to providing our patients with expert, individualised treatment and care. Our main hospital spans 8 floors comprising of 150+ patient beds and 10 operating theatres, including a Hybrid theatre and two minimally invasive/day surgery theatres. Speciality areas include, General surgery; ENT; Gynaecology; Hepatobiliary; Neuro-spinal; Ophthalmic; Orthopaedic; Plastic and reconstructive; Robotic; Urology; Vascular & Cancer surgery and treatment.


Job Profile

The role holds responsibility and accountability to manage, develop, direct and lead service improvement and performance strategies to ensure delivery of high quality, safe, efficient and effective patient care.

This is an exciting time for The London Clinic, as we drive a program of clinical transformation, led from within our clinical services. You’ll play an integral role in modernising services, improving access for patients and driving growth. You will have experience in leading complex services and teams in an acute hospital setting.

The role will oversee the end to end pathway, including booking and scheduling, patient access and patient flow through the hospital. The role will ensure services are delivered efficiently within the financial budgets for the service.


  • Job Type: Permanent position working Monday-Friday.
  • Hours: 37.5 Hours Monday-Friday

Key duties

  • Provide leadership, strategic direction and support to develop a culture of clinical effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Ensure continuous improvement of the patient, staff and consultant experience.
  • Develop KPI’s and dashboards to measure and monitor performance.
  • To maximise the operational and financial performance of surgical and medical services.
  • To ensure that efficient services are delivered in all areas with the effective and economic use of all resources, maintaining appropriate staffing levels at all times and promoting flexibility in working patterns.
  • To develop effective clinically led leadership structures and multi-disciplinary teams towards planned service development and revenue growth.
  • To closely monitor the utilisation and capacity of key resources, such as theatres and endoscopy suites and continually look at optimising these.
  • To optimise patient flow and utilisation of beds, day case and ambulatory areas.
  • To collaborate with consultants, encouraging close working with clinical teams, following good governance principles and building services and pathways for their patients.

Skills

  • Significant experience in developing and improving clinical and operational services and teams.
  • Experience of measuring and evaluating outcomes and utilisation of services.
  • A proven track record of delivering results/impact in a senior management role.
  • Ability to shape and implement a vision and strategy for a clinically excellent service.
  • Ability to lead and deliver an action plan for continuous quality improvements.
  • Able to demonstrate a professional approach and good decision making at all times.
  • Exceptional negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Excellent communication and organisation skills.
  • The ability to form strong working relationships.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Experience in defining and optimising patient pathways across a range of specialities.
  • Experience leading cost improvement programs.
  • An understanding of the private healthcare market and opportunities, and the challenges in the delivery of health care in the independent sector.
