Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Critical Care Department at the St. Michael's Hospital site of Unity Health Toronto. This appointment is for a five-year term renewable upon successful review. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024 or as mutually agreed upon.
St. Michael's seeks an outstanding leader with strong clinical, academic, administrative and interpersonal skills who as Chief will preserve and enhance the department's research enterprise and University academic connections, with commitment to grow outreach in alignment with the St. Michael's mission to serve vulnerable communities. The successful candidate will demonstrate proven leadership and mentorship skills, with a strong commitment to faculty diversity and wellbeing. They will hold a fellowship from the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada, be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario and should be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at the University of Toronto. Estimated remuneration will be commensurate with academic rank, qualifications and experience.
St. Michael's Hospital is a leading academic health science centre, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. St. Michael's Hospital along with St. Joseph's Health Centre and Providence Healthcare forms Unity Health Toronto, a network of Catholic Healthcare institutions.
The Department of Critical Care at St. Michael's Hospital has approximately 4000 admissions annually and consists of 4 level 3 adult ICUs (MSICU, TNICU, CVICU and CICU) with 76 beds and 12 level 2 beds situated in 3 separate step down areas. There are 20 physicians in the Critical Care Department who work in three of the four adult Critical Care units (MSICU, TNCIU and CVICU) and participate on the CCRT. The scope of the Chief is limited to these three units and their physicians and fosters strong collaboration and shared standards with the CICU as well as the ICU at the St. Joseph's Heath Center site of Unity Health Toronto.
The Department's clinical excellence and quality improvement priorities include support of the Hospital's specialized and regional programs - (level 1 trauma centre, stroke, vascular, STEMI, cardiac and neurosurgery) as well as an emphasis on highly functional teams, inclusivity in family and patient experience for our diverse population, and pride in our performance and innovation in organ donation.
The Department has a long history of excellence and focus in education and learner experience. This includes an important international fellowship program for subspecialty training as well as hosting many disciplines of learners in the units.
Finally, the Department is research-intensive, with priorities in clinical trials, mechanical ventilation, neuroCritical Care, trauma, translational research including biomarkers and mechanisms of Critical illness as well as global collaboration in pandemic research. Unity Health's Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute and its Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science has identified Critical Care as one of its 4 pillars of focus.
