Job description

Are you keen to find an exciting new role where you will be part of a dynamic, forward-thinking, agile team? If so, come and join us on the journey.

Why Michelmores? Michelmores is the destination law firm for the ambitious, the imaginative and the distinctive. We help enterprises and individuals navigate change to find a positive future.

We are a flexible, friendly and inclusive organisation with as clear a focus on fresh thinking as we have on growth and success. We value and nurture our people’s potential and inspiration and give them a creative, open and collaborative environment in which to develop a career and succeed.

We believe that whatever your legal experience, you’ll find Michelmores different. From day one we encourage our people to forge relationships and expand their understanding and knowledge of areas that interest them— developing an understanding of commercial challenges and opportunities, rather than just knowing the law. We nurture creative and commercial thinking to help in your long-term career success – it mirrors our approach to ensuring the very best outcomes for our clients too.

Finally, our culture really is something special to us. At Michelmores we take pride in how we all work together, whatever our role or seniority, and you’ll really grow and thrive because we encourage people to develop in areas that excite them or makes them different. That’s how we nurture the brightest and best lawyers.

What sort of work? Our Governance and Risk team are looking for an experienced Risk or Professional Indemnity Lawyer to join them. In this role you will have responsibility for handling claims and complaints, working closely with our lawyers across the Firm and reporting directly to the Partner within the team.

You will be handling professional negligence claims and complains, advising on the merits and liaising with key stakeholders including internal and external lawyers, PI brokers and insurers. This will include maintaining claims and complaints registers and providing reports. You will also contribute to the internal training of our lawyers.

Prior experience handling professional negligence claims, and preferably complaints, is essential. This role would suit an experienced professional indemnity lawyer, perhaps looking to move to an in-house legal or risk lawyer role.

Why this team? The Governance & Risk team is undergoing a period of growth, and this is a fantastic opportunity to join a growing team. Whilst your key responsibilities will be managing claims and complaints, there will be an opportunity to get involved in a broader range of risk issues. You will be joining a 12-strong team of lawyers (including two Partners) and other risk professionals, with room to progress.

Effective risk management is a key part of the Firm's governance structure and its culture. The Governance and Risk team of specialists work with the Firm and its lawyers to ensure we maintain the highest standards of professional conduct, effectively mitigate risk and are compliant with all our legal and regulatory requirements. The team's focus is very much on providing timely, pragmatic and solution-orientated risk advice and guidance. We pride ourselves on developing ways to continually improve the Firm's processes and the delivery of consistently high-quality services to our clients, which differentiate us from our competitors and enhances our client care.

How do we work? We take a flexible, agile approach to working patterns. As a team we agree together on the best working arrangements that will enable each of us to provide exceptional client service, to collaborate and connect with colleagues, and to achieve the right home/work balance. Most people in the Firm (who work full-time) choose to work 2-3 days a week in the office, with the balance being working from home. We pride ourselves on our high-performance culture whilst offering a good work/life balance.

As a Firm we are committed to supporting our people across all levels to achieve the balance they need. We are open to talk flexible working and to empower any candidate to put forward a flexible working pattern to meet their needs.

This role is being offered on a part-time basis, working approximately 21 hours a week. This could be 3 full days or 4 shorter days, we are flexible. The role could performed on a hybrid basis, with weekly attendance at either our Bristol or Exeter office.

Why now? In line with the Firm's ambitious growth plans, we are looking to grow the team to support the Firm. This is a unique opportunity for the right, highly-motivated individual to utilise their previous skills and experience in our supportive Governance and Risk team.

Who are we looking for? We are looking for somebody who will be a good fit for our team, understand our values, and thrive in our culture. As well as a solid track record as a professional indemnity lawyer, or of handling claims and/or complaints, you will be happy working autonomously or collaboratively with the broader team. The ideal person will have the following experience:

  • At least 4 years PQE as a Professional Indemnity Lawyer, or an experienced Claims and Complaints professional.
  • Able to work well under pressure with multiple deadlines and have a pro-active approach to tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, being an effective communicator at all levels (written and verbal)
  • A collaborative, creative and commercial approach to work with an enthusiasm to take part in the wider activities of the Firm, outside of the direct team, and to working collaboratively with other teams
  • Motivation and commitment to work towards personal, team and Firm-wide goals

This is a great opportunity to join a Firm which believes potential, inspiration, and teamwork should be valued and nurtured.

We work hard to create and sustain an open and collaborative environment. We embrace change and constantly evolve to meet our people’s diverse needs, in the same way that we help our clients to navigate and stay ahead of developments, to move forward together.
