Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Clinical/Counselling Psychologist or experienced Psychological Therapist to join the team at the highly regarded and well-respected West Midlands Cystic Fibrosis centre at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

Ideally, the applicant would have experience working in a physical health setting, but we are happy to consider other relevant experience and transferable skills. We would also be happy to consider a recently qualified psychologist or trainee in the final year of training to commence initially on Band 7 and be supported to progress to Band 8a through a preceptorship process.

As a specialist regional service, there are lots of opportunities for continuing professional development with close working relationships with the multidisciplinary team of doctors, clinical nurse specialists, physiotherapists and dietitians Research, audit and service evaluation are highly valued within the service and all staff are encouraged to be involved with this.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The successful candidate will join the well-established psychosocial team made up of a principal psychologist and two social workers. You will work with your own clinical case load, with clinical work focussing on supporting adherence to treatment, anxiety and depression of patients who are living with a complex health condition and end of life care to patients and their families.

The post holder will also be involved in staff consultation, research, multidisciplinary work, and teaching and training. The post holder will be supported and professionally managed by the Lead CF Psychologist.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Entry-level qualification in applied psychological therapy/mental health/social welfare profession or equivalent and demonstrable practice in this field (ie professional Doctorate,

or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level/supervised practice/additional training) that has been accepted for the purposes of professional registration.

  • Additional training beyond entry level qualification in a specialised area of psychological practice (through formal post-qualification training (PG Diploma or equivalent), OR a combination of specialist short courses and/an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice-based learning in a specialist area of clinical psychological therapy practice, assessed by a registered body and/or an experienced clinical supervisor to be of equal level to a Postgraduate Diploma or higher.
  • Registered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist or BABCP/UKCP registered and evidence of continuing professional development required.

Experience

Essential

  • Assessed experience of working as qualified clinical/counselling psychologist or psychological therapist at specialist level.
  • Experience of working in clinical services with a wide variety of clients across the lifespan with a range of clinical presentations.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, as a professionally qualified psychological therapist and within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
  • Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
  • Experience of supervising trainee psychological therapists and/or other professionals.
  • Experience of carrying out postgraduate research, audit or service evaluation projects.
  • Knowledge of legislation/health care guidelines and their implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to adults with Cystic Fibrosis.
  • Knowledge of legislation relating to safeguarding and vulnerable adults
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the HCPC, BPS and other relevant professional bodies.
  • Post-graduate level knowledge of research design and methodology, as practiced within the field of clinical psychology and psychotherapy.
