Job Summary
Microbiology Services Laboratory (MSL) is a specialist laboratory responsible for the confirmation of virological/microbiological screen reactivity in samples from blood, tissue and stem cell donors. MSL also performs some specialist non-blood donor screening (tissue, stem cell and organ donors), the lot release testing of microbiological assays, and provides expert advice and guidance.
You will be working within the virology laboratory as part of a scientific and clinical team, including doctors, nurses and other health care professionals and the role you perform will directly contribute to saving and improving patients lives.
There are many opportunities for career advancement within NHSBT. With experience and training you may progress to managing a section of the laboratory, right through to lead scientist with responsibility for the entire laboratory service. You may use your knowledge to specialise in an area vital to the operation of a modern reference service such as Quality Control, training and education, or research and development.

Main duties of the job
- You will be required to perform, analyse, record and interpret a wide range of virological laboratory investigations and technical procedures relating to the issue of results from blood, organ, tissue and stem cell donors, with the support of the team.
- You will be responsible for the support and training of new and less experienced staff.
- You will be required to handle blood samples and operate a range of laboratory analysers and equipment.
- You will be required to provide cover in times of operational difficulty, with reasonable notice.
About You
Experience and Knowledge
- Broad science knowledge with a specialist knowledge in microbiology/virology gained through previous experience working as a Biomedical Scientist
- Experience in specialised laboratory techniques using a wide range of complex equipment
- Experience in prioritising and issuing work to other staff and monitoring progress to ensure deadlines are met
- Understanding of UK Accreditation Service (UKAS), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), UK Blood Transfusion Service (UKBTS) and Human Tissue Authority (HTA) regulations
- Experience of working with Information Technology
- Experience of writing reports, preparing and delivering presentations and training and mentoring staff
Qualifications and Training
- Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist
- Biomedical Science or appropriate scientific degree graduate with relevant post graduate training or equivalent experience
- Evidence of continuous learning and professional development Willingness to undertake further training and development

The normal working hours for this role are 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday, with a flexible start between 07:00am to 09:30am, subject to managers agreement.
