The Northern Care Alliance Microbiology service is currently delivered from two main laboratories situated at Salford Royal and Royal Oldham hospital sites; the laboratory at Salford Royal also provides Microbiology services for The Christie under a Service Level Agreement and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust as part of a joint venture (Pathology at Wigan and Salford – PAWS). The formation of the Northern Care Alliance has led to us transforming service delivery for our patients and Microbiology is actively working towards planning a single service model.
Positions are available on both sites.
Main duties of the job
To complement our excellent team further we are looking for an enthusiastic innovative and highly motivated individual committed to providing a high quality service to join us in this very busy department.
You should have good technical expertise, a sound knowledge of diagnostic microbiology, with excellent organisational, communications and interpersonal skills.
You should be either registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), or have evidence of eligibility and have completed the IBMS registration portfolio/ equivalent. Please note that we are currently not able to consider employment of trainee Biomedical Scientists i.e. applicants without the above requirements.
It is important to note that if you are successful, you will be required to participate in all rosters when competent. These support the current opening hours of 08:00 – 20:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00 – 17:30 Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays, with an on-call service outside of these hours; however as the Trust and the NHS move towards providing 24/7 healthcare there will be a future requirement to provide to support this in Microbiology.

Registration and qualification
Essential criteria
- BSc with Honours in Biomedical Science, or IBMS approved alternative science degree plus post graduate certificate in Biomedical Science or approved equivalent.
- HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist
Desirable criteria
- IMBS Registration Portfolio
Knowledge skills and experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant practical experience and theoretical knowledge of Diagnostic Microbiology
- Evidence of experience of a range of diagnostic Microbiology skills
- Evidence of good organisational/ planning/ time management skills
- Evidence of attention to detail
- Experience of use of laboratory equipment
- Eperience of use of computers/ software/ LIMS
- Evidence of good analytical judgment and technical skills
