Are you a dynamic and innovative Biomedical Scientist (BMS) with experience in Point of Care Testing or a BMS from blood sciences or infection sciences looking for a new challenge in POCT and a great work life balance?
We're on the lookout for a passionate individual to join our professional and friendly department as a Band 6 BMS.
The POCT department offers a comprehensive POCT service (including biochemistry, haematology and microbiology disciplines) to Northern Care Alliance and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust hospitals, as well as providing some community services. The POCT department provides support for analytical testing at or near the site of patient care.
You will be based primarily at our Oldham site, as we continue to develop our POCT service in an area that offers affordable, vibrant city night life and stunning locations. You may be expected to visit other sites as and when required.
The post holder will primarily work on the wards and in the departments of the Northern Care Alliance that use POCT devices and tests, and in the Pathology laboratories.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be HCPC Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist and will be required to provide continuous and comprehensive POCT Pathology service as an aid to effective diagnosis and treatment of patients.
They will assist the POCT Manager and Technical leads for POCT with all aspects to ensure the service meets and is in line with UKAS Standard ISO 15189:2022. The post holder will be expected to work autonomously.
To maintain competence through CPD.
Act as a mentor and provide supervision / training for more junior scientific & support staff.
Deputise for more senior staff, as and when required

- BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences (IBMS approved) or approved alternative science degree plus post graduate certificate in Biomedical Science or equivalent
- IBMS Specialist Portfolio, or equivalent qualifications and/or experience

- MSc Biomedical Science
- IBMS Certificate of Expert Practice
Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience
Essential criteria
- Post registration laboratory training in either Infection Sciences and / or Blood Sciences Discipline
- Specialist knowledge across a range of work procedures and practices underpinned by theoretical knowledge in either Infection Sciences and / or Blood Sciences Discipline.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
- Knowledge of LIMS knowledge in either Infection Sciences and / or Blood Sciences Discipline.
- Analytical, judgement and technical skills with attention to detail.
- Good team working, with ability to form effective working relationships.
Desirable criteria
- Post registration experience in POCT.
- Specialist knowledge across a range of work procedures and practices underpinned by theoretical knowledge in POCT.
- Knowledge of POCT LIMS and IT systems.
- Knowledge of Quality Management systems and performing audits.
- Working in clinical care or customer based service setting.
