Your new team
This position sits in our Chivas Brothers business. At Chivas Brothers, our 1,600-strong team across 27 sites is committed to upholding the heritage of Scotch and ensuring its sustainable future, as well as opening it up to new audiences across the globe.
The scope of Operations stretches from Procurement through conversion (distillation and maturation) and manufacturing (or bottling) to all the downstream Supply Chain activities until the final product is delivered. In addition, Operations play a very active role in Innovation, Talent Development and Operational Risk Management.
The expert Blending team are responsible for the liquid quality of our large portfolio of blended and single malt Scotch Whiskies as well as all new and maturing inventory. The team of 9 are based out of our Kilmalid site in Dumbarton.
Your unique contribution
The Blending Technician will develop advanced sensory skills through extensive training to assist in the day-to-day organoleptic assessment of production samples and all other sensory analysis requirements within an expert Blending team.
You will have three main areas of responsibility:
Blending & Sensory Analysis –
To support the Blending Team Leader in delivering all departmental objectives, including:
  • Pilot blending for future cask dumping operations and nosing high value casks to meet bottling requirements.
  • Assessing and reporting on the quality of all malt and grain spirit produced and procured by Chivas Brothers.
  • leading sensory analysis requirements for the department, including panel work, product formulations and NPD.
  • To deliver training and assessments for everyone in a sensory quality role within Chivas Brothers, as required.
Small Scale Bottling – to operate and maintain a small-scale bottling facility, supporting >30L sample requests required by the Innovation Team and delivering ‘low volume’ spirit processing for interim bottlings of bespoke, small batch, high value products.
Samples and Sample Room –
  • To work closely with (and eventually have the capability to deputise for) the Blending Team Leader in the day to day running of the Sample Room.
  • Set up and assessment of all daily production samples, including new-make, mature and bottling vat samples as well as co-ordinating samples in the event of quality issues happening within our Production or Manufacturing functions.
  • Supporting the sample process required for NPD through receipting, organising and destroying samples as required
  • Ensuring the Sample Room, and accompanying storage areas, are maintained to a high standard.
  • Supporting the Blending Manager in sampling maturing inventory in-line with Spirit Quality reviews.
Who you’ll be working with
Internally, you’ll collaborate closely with the rest of the Blending team as well as the wider Production team. You will also collaborate with other departments across the company including our Manufacturing, Vatting, Innovation and Technical teams.
Externally, you’ll collaborate with external trades and customers.
Your blend of talent
This position could be right for you if you:
  • Have previous experience in a similar role, ideally within the whisky industry and can demonstrate the ability to develop good sensory capability.
  • Are PC literate and able to demonstrate strong numeric and literacy skills.
  • Are able to communicate well with people at all levels of the business and can maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Hold a UK Driving Licence as you will be required to travel and work at other locations, this may be at short notice.
  • Are detail orientated and are capable of managing multiple tasks/projects
