Job overview

Our Business & Digital (B&D) engineering team devise innovative solutions across the business on a variety of programmes for the future – for our customers, our colleagues and for London.

Our B&D engineering teams -

  • Problem-solve by understanding TfL’s complex business needs;
  • Support the management of TfL’s assets throughout their lifecycle by the efficient use of engineering information;
  • Exploit the use of Digital Engineering, helping programmes to use data effectively to make decisions and collaborate with our supply chain;
  • Identify opportunities to do things differently and work with partners inside and outside TfL to turn those opportunities into reality

In this role, you’ll be supporting our Business Engineering team to provide optimised engineering solutions for TfL’s uniquely complex issues.

There are many projects across Business Engineering, such as finding and implementing efficiencies in maintenance programmes; and technical engineering on initiatives to support TfL’s NetZero aims. All these are key in enabling TfL to meet our financial, operational and sustainability goals -helping to ensure that TfL is a strong, green heartbeat for London. These could not happen without the involvement and groundwork undertaken by a Business & Digital engineers.

What will I be doing?

Your 18-month development programme will be made up of 3 to 5 exciting placements, each 3-6 months long. These will include placements within the Business & Digital team and then 2 to 4 placements in other TfL Engineering teams. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for a successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique.

Within the Business & Digital team, you will be gaining valuable insight in core Business Analyst skills used within Engineering, such as learning how to elicit, document and manage business requirements; modelling and simulating, research and write business engineering processes. You will also learn about Digital Engineering and the digital twin, along with asset condition management. These skills will enable you to identify enhancements for the success of TfL and our customers – all the while you will develop valuable experience in engaging and managing stakeholders.

Your remaining placements can be aligned to your interests to support you in your future career. Possible placements within Business & Digital could be with Business Engineering, Digital Engineering and integration, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Asset Condition Management and more.

Outside Business & Digital, your placements could be with the programmes and projects working to upgrade and replace our assets and update how we maintain and operate our assets. You could also work with our discipline engineers, gaining an insight into the unique challenges associated with assets such as rolling stock, signals or bridges & structures. Your Scheme Sponsor will ensure your placements are relevant and support your development.

Where can this career take me?

Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could choose to further your career in engineering by taking up a position within the Business & Digital team. However, your newly acquired knowledge and skills will enable you to operate in multiple departments within or outside of Engineering, depending on your career aspirations. TfL is a large and diverse organisation, and the breadth of the Business Analyst role means there will be many opportunities to progress, both in the Business & Digital team and wider TfL structure.

What training and support will you get?

You will be working towards a BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis and receive other related soft skills and technical skills training.

Our award-winning teams will support your ongoing development, through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements. We'll support your professional development through a combination of training, mentoring, and networking.

You'll also receive one-to-one guidance throughout the programme from your:

  • Placement manager: Responsible for your day-to-day management and support with your development
  • Scheme sponsor: A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser and has line manager responsibility
  • Buddy: Usually an apprentice or graduate who gives support to you and ensure that you feel welcomed in the organisation
  • Development adviser: Supports your professional development through providing career coaching and career progression at TfL

What do we look for?

Our core values are extremely important to us, and we desire candidates who are:

  • Caring about our colleagues, our customers and our work
  • Open to each other, to new ideas and to working together
  • Adaptable to diverse needs and willing to innovate
